PTA Meeting Minutes
March 10, 2015
Attendees: Elizabeth Plantz, Robert Ostrinsky, Lisa Antoniacci, Lynne Sager, John
Moriarty, Deirdre Appel, Dawn Trahern, Meredith Singer, Jane Tom, Beatrice Hanson,
Michelle Lugo, Mr. Davis
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 pm.
A motion was made, seconded, and unanimously passed to approve the PTA meeting
minutes from January 13, 2015.
Treasurer’s Report (Robert Ostrinsky)
The Office Supplies line item is a little over because new software was needed. Earnings
from Restaurant Nights are a little bit under what was expected so far. Overall, though, the
budget is looking good.
Grants Program: Of the $2,000 allocated for grants, $650 remains after the $1,350 award in
January to the English department. Mrs. Witmer and Mr. Megary have submitted, and Mr.
Davis has reviewed, an application for monitor speakers for the Drama program. A motion
was made to approve up to, but not exceeding, $650 for the speakers, accessories and related
sales tax and shipping charges. The motion was seconded, and unanimously passed to
approve the application.
MCCPTA Delegate’s Report (Meredith Singer)
MCCPTA is looking for candidates for Board positions.
President’s Report (Beatrice Hanson)

Nominating Committee: Three people were named to form the Nominating Committee for
candidates for next year’s open PTA positions:
 Lynne Sager
 Lisa Antoniacci
 John Moriarty
At the next PTA meeting, a slate of nominees needs to be presented. A list of open positions
was distributed (see attached). The current Treasurer is continuing next year. Submit names
for nominees to the Nominating Committee or Beatrice Hanson.
The next PTA meeting will be in April.
Alcohol/Drug Awareness Program – Phase 3: The “Conversations that Count” program,
coordinated by Mimi Fleury, will be held at Magruder HS on April 28, 2015. The total cost
of the program is $1,500, but $800 will be covered by a grant. The remaining $700 is to be
split between Redland and Shady Grove MS. The $350 for Redland will be taken out of the
Cultural Art & Curriculum Support budget line item. Shady Grove has two parent volunteers.
Redland needs to have parent volunteers, too, to attend 2 meetings and help on the day of the
program.
Principal’s Report (Everett Davis)





Music program fruit sale fundraiser earned close to $24,000.
Lego League won 2nd place for Research at the State competition.
6th grade Outdoor Education meeting with Mr. Snyder will be on March 25, 2015.
PARCC testing schedule distributed (see attached).
New Initiatives:
o Search for new School Superintendent – MCPS website has a survey for
community input and feedback.
o Staffing changes – overall gained 0.2 in staffing
 Projected enrollment for 2015-16 is 559 students (20 more than last
year).
 Staff Development teacher will change to a part-time position.
 ESOL – going down to 3 sections next year
 Speech Pathologist will also go down
 Support Service Staff – going down from 6 hours to 4 hours
 Losing ASA position – match Administrators to students ratio at other
middle schools.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm.
