The meeting was called to order at 7:30 pm. A motion was made, seconded, and unanimously passed to approve the PTA meeting minutes from May 13, 2014. Open PTA Board Positions As of May, three PTA board positions were open, and they are filled as follows: 1. VP of Community Outreach – Ritu Vohra 2. MCCPTA Delegate – Meredith Singer 3. Treasurer – Bill Hicks had to step down as Treasurer and Ritu Vohra temporarily filled the position. Now Robert Ostrinsky will be Treasurer for the remainder of the year. The function of Treasurer has continued without interruption through the transitions, and, as of October 5th, all funds have been deposited. 2014-2015 RMS PTA Board 10/14/14 President – Beatrice Hanson VP of Fundraising – Tina Williams VP of Community Outreach – Ritu Vohra VP of Events – Dawn Trahern Treasurer – Robert Ostrinksy Secretary – Jane Tom MCCPTA Delegate – Meredith Singer MCCPTA Delegate – Lisa Resnick Treasurer’s Report (Beatrice Hanson for Ritu Vohra) Audit: The audit of last year’s books is done and went fine. It will be filed with MCCPTA. Budget: The goal for the fall direct appeal fundraiser was $6,000. That goal wasn’t reached so the budget was adjusted to $4,000. The changes from last year’s budget were the amount for cultural arts and curriculum support is $1,000 less and the After Prom amount is reduced to $50 and the amount was added to Every 15 Minutes. The amount for the 8th grade event hasn’t been used for 2 years so that amount has gone down and can be added to curriculum support if needed. If any more funds come in during the year, it can be added to curriculum support. A motion was made, seconded, and unanimously passed to approve the budget for 2014-15. Grants Program: At the end of last year (06/30/14), we had $12,400 left and it was rolled over to this year. In the past the PTA has set aside funds from the reserve to give grants to teachers for curriculum support. This year $2,000 is proposed to be used for grants. Since the funds come from the reserve, the budget is not affected by the grants program. Teachers will submit proposals to Mr. Davis, who will review them and forward appropriate ones to the PTA to vote on. There will be no cut-off date for submitting proposals. Past grants included: Netbooks, a laminating machine and a bird feeder for the science department. A motion was made, seconded, and unanimously passed to approve the $2,000 be set aside from the reserves for the grants program. MCCPTA Delegate’s Report (Meredith Singer) If Redland has any need for the Major Capital Improvement Program, bring to the delegates to take to the County PTA. A flyer will be going out and available online about Community Service Week opportunities happening next week. This is a big opportunity for students to receive SSL hours. There will be a Lt. Governor Candidates Forum held next Sunday night that is hosted by the MCCPTA, and it will also be broadcast on TV. President’s Report (Beatrice Hanson) Thank you to Lisa Wight for her work on the student directory. Thank you to the membership and fundraising ladies. As of today, there are 195 PTA members (42 staff members) almost reaching the goal of 200. As of today, our fundraiser has brought in $4,025. The next PTA meeting will be on November 11, 2014 in the media center. There will be an alcohol and drug awareness presentation. Principal’s Report (Everett Davis, Matt Johnson, Shenice Brevard) Back to School Night: Feedback from parents was positive. They felt it was organized, but thought that the time was too short. Responses about the parent workshops were mainly for college preparation and study skills. The county has resources online for college fairs and scholarship fairs. Study skills have been addressed during the Advisory period. Teacher Conferences: Conferences will be held on November 10, 2014. There will be a sign-up for individual conferences during the day. In the evening, there will be arena style conferences like last year. New Initiatives: The school will look to get parent feedback quarterly (as part of SIP) for the instructional focus for students to use academic language through writing. The Magruder cluster principals will host a lunch on October 24, 2014 with realtors to highlight the positive aspects of the local schools. There will be a handout going home with students about health updates and resources. Parent Open House/Walkthrough: It was held on October 13, 2014, and over 60 parents attended. The parents gave good feedback and comments. There were comments about 6 th grade lunch: the lunch period seems short to the students but they have 30 minutes, same as the other grades. It is the largest lunch period, and the 6th graders are still adjusting. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm. Final 10/16/2014 - JNT
