Library Cards: why do you need them?
•To log into computers at the library
•To check out books and materials from
the library
•To access databases from
any computer off campus
Let’s look at doing
research for a written
report
Do you have a topic?
How about tattoo removal?
Choose a Topic that interests you!
 Brainstorm a list of keywords for your topic:
Antioxidants and aging
AIDS as a women’s health issue
Plastic surgery as a graduation gift
Think of broad and narrow keywords:
BROAD
 Nutrition
 AIDS
 Surgery
NARROW
 “Anti-aging therapies”
 AIDS OR HIV AND women
 “Plastic surgery” AND “teenage girls”
Use Alternate words for the same general topic:
 Phytonutrients, flavonoids
 HIV, AIDS (disease)
 “camouflage cosmetics,” rhinoplasty,
“breast augmentation”
You have your topic, you have some keywords,
and you’re ready to find information…
where do you begin?
Ask your friends?
Ask your
instructor?
Watch TV and hope
“60 Minutes” or
“Dateline” will cover
your topic?
Google it? Search a
database?
Most people go
right to the
Internet/Web
Let’s Look at Some Websites:
RYT Hospital-DeWayne Medical Center
Martin Luther King
Dihydrogen Monoxide
As a Researcher, You Need to
Critically Evaluate
All Websites !!
What about wikipedia??
From the blog
So, what about
wikipedia??
Use it as a RESOURCE and not a SOURCE, and
definitely not as your sole source, and THINK
about what you read!
Click HERE to see some interesting
information about wikipedia
Use wikipedia as a RESOURCE,
not a SOURCE
Some instructors will not allow wikipedia as a source…but the sources
listed at the end of wikipedia articles can be
GREAT places to look.
????????????????
 If the web isn’t totally reliable, how
can you use the Internet for research
and know that what you are looking
at is reliable / true / authoritative??
 MPC pays a license fee for
REFERENCE DATABASES, including
some that are excellent for an
assignment such as
topics related to women’s health.
 Let’s look briefly at one of these!
Let’s look at doing online research
Using the REFERENCE SERVICE
“EBSCOHost”
 EBSCOHost at MPC is a collection of
22 different databases including fulltext databases and popular databases
from leading information providers.
 The databases include CINAHL,
Health Source (both Consumer and
Nursing/Academic editions) and
Medline.
How do we
access the
databases?
If you are off campus you will be asked to enter
a valid library card number
“General” or “Medical / Nursing”
There are 4 varied databases
Enter your search terms
More focused results by limiting
to full-text or limiting years
Browse for promising articles
Retrieve the record for an article
“pdf” is a scanned image
Let’s talk about citations
• You need to cite your sources
– Acknowledge work of others
– Provide instructor means to verify
• “One book, one journal, one Internet source”
• Easy way to do citations:
– MPC Library Handouts – use as models
– Noodle Tools (NoodleBib)
Let’s Do
an
Exercise!
Searching Exercise –

Other Good Databases:

Access Science
Health & Wellness Resource Center
Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center
Let’s look at one of these!
What About Finding a Book ?
Under “Books & More” click on
“Online Catalog”
Quick search screen
Quick search for “osteoporosis”
• MPC has many thousands of books available
online
• The collections include up-to-date material
on general subjects and technical topics (we
would not be able to afford to keep these
current in print format)
• You can access the books using the Web
from anywhere
• It’s free!
Click the link to access the book
You may need to
create a free
account
Here’s the book!
If MPC doesn’t have anything,
you can search other
libraries by going to
“Links to Other Libraries”
For example…
This book is at
UCSC, and we can
request it for you
by “ILL” or
Interlibrary Loan
Let’s do another exercise!
• Navigate to
the library
catalog.
• Search for a
book.
• Create an ebook login if
you wish.
• Search other
libraries if
you wish.
If you have any questions
please ask a librarian!!
Thank You!
