Possible topic: Gender Differences in Communication CHOOSE A TOPIC THAT INTERESTS YOU! Brainstorm a list of keywords for your topic: Topic ideas: Obstacles in Intercultural communication Emotional intelligence in education and the workplace Reinforcing gender stereotyping Think of broad and narrow keywords: BROAD “ Communication Emotions (or intelligence) Gender NARROW “intercultural communication” “emotional intelligence” gender AND stereotyping Use Alternate words for the same general topic: “cross-cultural differences,” language AND multicultural, communication AND culture, assimilation “multiple intelligences,” “interpersonal relations,” “social intelligence” “sex roles,” “gender stereotypes,” “sex differences,” gender AND attitude OR perception, “gender identity” YOU HAVE YOUR TOPIC, YOU HAVE SOME KEYWORDS, AND YOU’RE READY TO FIND INFORMATION… WHERE DO YOU BEGIN? Ask your friends? Ask your instructor? Watch TV? (you can hope “60 Minutes” or “Dateline” will cover your topic) Google it? Search a database? What about wikipedia?? From the blog Use it as a RESOURCE and not a SOURCE, and not asWIKIPEDIA your sole source! SO,definitely WHAT ABOUT ?? What does that mean? Click HERE to see some interesting information about wikipedia USE WIKIPEDIA AS A RESOURCE, NOT AS A SOURCE Some instructors will not allow wikipedia as a source…but the sources listed at the end of wikipedia articles can be GREAT places to look for sources of information. ???????????????? If the web isn’t totally reliable, how can you use the Internet for research and know that what you are looking at is reliable / true / authoritative?? MPC pays a license fee for REFERENCE DATABASES, including some that are excellent for a topic such as those related to acculturation, education, and gender Let’s look briefly at one of these! LET’S LOOK AT DOING ONLINE RESEARCH USING THE REFERENCE DATABASE “OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS” Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center at MPC is a database that presents both sides of current topics and may include essays, reference material, statistics, full-text articles, multimedia or links to valid websites. Let’s look at a sample search… SUBJECT SEARCH FOR “SEX DIFFERENCES” ARTICLES FROM MAGAZINES VS. JOURNALS: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? ARTICLES FROM MAGAZINES VS. JOURNALS: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? How do we access the databases? SCROLL DOWN TO SELECT “ALPHABETICAL LIST OF DATABASES AND FULL-TEXT ARTICLES” Click on the name of the database If you are off campus you will be asked to enter a valid library card number CLICK ON “PROCEED” SELECT “OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS” LET’S DO AN EXERCISE! SEARCHING EXERCISE Log on to the computer. Navigate to the library website (from www.mpc.edu, click on “Library”) Scroll to list of DATABASES Select Opposing Viewpoints Search for information related to your topic. Under “Books & More” click on “Online Catalog” QUICK SEARCH SCREEN: SEARCH FOR “MUSLIM WOMEN” QUICK SEARCH FOR “MUSLIM WOMEN” MPC has many thousands of books available online The collections include up-to-date material on general subjects and technical topics (we would not be able to afford to keep these current in print format) You can access the books using the Web from anywhere It’s free! CLICK THE LINK TO ACCESS THE BOOK You may need to create a free account HERE’S THE BOOK! If MPC doesn’t have anything, you can search other libraries by going to “Links to Other Libraries” FOR EXAMPLE… This book is at MIIS, and we can request it for you by “ILL” or Interlibrary Loan LET’S DO ANOTHER EXERCISE! Navigate to the library catalog. Search for a book. Create an e-book login if you wish. Search other libraries if you wish.
