LET’S LOOK AT DOING RESEARCH FOR
A WRITTEN REPORT
DO YOU HAVE A TOPIC?
Possible topic:
Gender Differences in Communication
CHOOSE A TOPIC THAT INTERESTS YOU!

Brainstorm a list of keywords for your topic:

Topic ideas:
Obstacles in Intercultural communication
Emotional intelligence in education and the workplace
Reinforcing gender stereotyping
Think of broad and narrow keywords:
BROAD
“
 Communication
 Emotions (or intelligence)
 Gender
NARROW
“intercultural communication”
“emotional intelligence”
gender AND stereotyping
Use Alternate words for the same general topic:
 “cross-cultural differences,” language AND multicultural,
communication AND culture, assimilation
 “multiple intelligences,” “interpersonal relations,”
“social intelligence”
 “sex roles,” “gender stereotypes,” “sex differences,”
gender AND attitude OR perception, “gender identity”
YOU HAVE YOUR TOPIC, YOU HAVE SOME KEYWORDS,
AND YOU’RE READY TO FIND INFORMATION…
WHERE DO YOU BEGIN?
Ask your friends?
 Ask your instructor?
 Watch TV? (you can hope
“60 Minutes” or “Dateline”
will cover your topic)
 Google it? Search a
database?

Most people go
right to the
Internet/Web
LET’S LOOK AT SOME WEBSITES:
RYT Hospital-DeWayne Medical Center
Martin Luther King
Dihydrogen Monoxide
As a Researcher, You Need to
Critically Evaluate
All Websites !!
What about wikipedia??
From the blog
Use it as a RESOURCE and not a SOURCE, and
not asWIKIPEDIA
your sole source!
SO,definitely
WHAT ABOUT
??
What does that mean?
Click HERE to see some interesting information about
wikipedia
USE WIKIPEDIA AS A RESOURCE,
NOT AS A SOURCE
Some instructors will not allow wikipedia as a source…but the
sources listed at the end of wikipedia articles can be
GREAT places to look for sources of information.
????????????????

If the web isn’t totally reliable, how
can you use the Internet for research
and know that what you are looking at
is reliable / true / authoritative??
MPC pays a license fee for
REFERENCE DATABASES, including
some that are excellent for a topic
such as those related to
acculturation, education, and gender

Let’s look briefly at one of these!

LET’S LOOK AT DOING ONLINE RESEARCH
USING THE REFERENCE DATABASE
“OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS”

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center
at MPC is a database that presents
both sides of current topics and may
include essays, reference material,
statistics, full-text articles, multimedia
or links to valid websites.

Let’s look at a sample search…
SUBJECT SEARCH FOR “SEX DIFFERENCES”
ARTICLES FROM MAGAZINES VS. JOURNALS:
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
