LET’S LOOK AT DOING RESEARCH FOR
A WRITTEN REPORT
DO YOU HAVE A TOPIC?
Possible topic:
Columbine
CHOOSE A TOPIC THAT INTERESTS YOU!

Brainstorm a list of keywords for your topic:

Topic ideas:
September 11 WTC attack
Conflict in Darfur
Michael Phelps wins 8 gold medals at 2008 Olympics
Think of broad and narrow keywords:
BROAD
 9/11
 Darfur
 Olympics
NARROW
“World Trade Center Building 7”
Sudan AND genocide
M. Phelps AND “Olympic records”
Use Alternate words for the same general topic:
 “domestic terrorism,” Al Qaida AND terrorism,
“9/11 conspiracy theories,” Osama bin Laden
 U.N. AND Sudan OR Darfur, Janjaweed,
“ethnic cleansing” AND Africa
 “2008 Olympics” AND swimming, endorsements AND
“Michael Phelps” AND marijuana
YOU HAVE YOUR TOPIC, YOU HAVE SOME KEYWORDS,
AND YOU’RE READY TO FIND INFORMATION…
WHERE DO YOU BEGIN?
Ask your friends?
 Ask your instructor?
 Watch TV? (you can hope
“60 Minutes” or “Dateline”
will cover your topic)
 Google it? Search a
database?

Most people go
right to the
Internet/Web
LET’S LOOK AT SOME WEBSITES:
RYT Hospital-DeWayne Medical Center
Martin Luther King
Dihydrogen Monoxide
As a Researcher, You Need to
Critically Evaluate
All Websites !!
What about wikipedia??
From the blog
Use it as a RESOURCE and not a SOURCE, and
not asWIKIPEDIA
your sole source!
SO,definitely
WHAT ABOUT
??
What does that mean?
Click HERE to see some interesting information about
wikipedia
USE WIKIPEDIA AS A RESOURCE,
NOT AS A SOURCE
Some instructors will not allow wikipedia as a source…but the
sources listed at the end of wikipedia articles can be
GREAT places to look for sources of information.
????????????????

If the web isn’t totally reliable, how
can you use the Internet for research
and know that what you are looking at
is reliable / true / authoritative??
MPC pays a license fee for
REFERENCE DATABASES, including
some that are excellent for topics
such as those related to
news events

Let’s look briefly at one of these!

LET’S LOOK AT DOING ONLINE RESEARCH
USING THE REFERENCE DATABASE
“ACADEMIC SEARCH PREMIER”

Academic Search Premier is one of the
databases for which MPC pays a license fee
to a company called EBSCO. (Sometimes
the databases are referred to as “EBSCO or
EBSCOHost).

A.S.P. provides full text for more than 4,500
journals, including full text for more than
3,700 peer-reviewed titles (includes
professional journals and topical/specialty
journals)

Let’s look at a sample search…
