Let’s look at doing research for a
written report
Do you have a topic?
Possible topics:
Myth vs. Reality
Choose a Topic that interests you!

Brainstorm a list of keywords for your topic:
 Topic ideas (myth or image vs. reality):
Career in forensic science
Teen pregnancy
Gangs / gangster life
Think of broad and narrow keywords:
BROAD
 CSI
 Pregnancy
 Gangs
NARROW
“Crime scene investigation” AND career
Teens OR adolescents AND pregnancy
“street crime” AND gangs
Use Alternate words for the same general topic:
 CSI, crime, criminal, investigation, “forensic scientist(s)”
career, “vocational guidance”
 “teen pregnancy,” “Juno effect,” teenagers, adolescents,
pregnancy, parenthood, “birth control, ”contraception,
 gangs, gangsters, Crips, Bloods, MS-13, “Mara Salvatrucha,”
“drug trafficking,” Michoacan
You have your topic, you have some
keywords, and you’re ready to find
information… where do you begin?
 Ask
your friends?
 Ask your instructor?
 Watch TV? (you can
hope
“60 Minutes” or
“Dateline” will cover
your topic)
 Google it? Search a
database?
Most people go
right to the
Internet/Web
Let’s Look at Some Websites:
RYT Hospital-DeWayne Medical Center
Martin Luther King
Dihydrogen Monoxide
As a Researcher, You Need to
Critically Evaluate
All Websites !!
What about wikipedia??
From the blog
Use it as a RESOURCE and not a SOURCE, and
definitely not as your sole source!
So, what about wikipedia??
What does that mean?
Click HERE to see some interesting
information about wikipedia
Use wikipedia as a RESOURCE,
NOT AS A SOURCE
Some instructors will not allow wikipedia as a source…but the
sources listed at the end of wikipedia articles can be
GREAT places to look for sources of information.
????????????????
If the web isn’t totally reliable, how
can you use the Internet for research
and know that what you are looking at
is reliable / true / authoritative??
 MPC pays a license fee for
REFERENCE DATABASES, including
some that are excellent for topics
such as these


Let’s look briefly at one of these!
Let’s look at doing online research
Using the REFERENCE DATABASE
“Academic Search Premier”

Academic Search Premier is one of the
databases for which MPC pays a license fee
to a company called EBSCO. (Sometimes the
databases are referred to as “EBSCO or
EBSCOHost).

A.S.P. provides full text for more than 4,500
journals, including full text for more than
3,700 peer-reviewed titles (includes
professional journals and topical/specialty
journals)
 Let’s
look at a sample search…
To choose a periodical database, go to our webpage
and click on Alphabetical List of Databases and FullText Articles.
www.mpc.edu/library
Select Alphabetical List of Databases and Full-Text Articles
How do we
access the
databases?
Scroll down to select
“Alphabetical List of
Databases and Full-text Articles”
This is a List of some of the
online sources available
through the MPC Library.
If you are off campus you will be asked to enter
a valid library card number
Search Screen of Academic Search
Premier
Enter your
search terms
here.
 If you want fulltext articles
ONLY, click
here.
 If you only
want scholarly
journals, click
here.
Some articles are full-text but not
all of them.

MPC has many thousands of books available
online
The collections include up-to-date material on
general subjects and technical topics (we
would not be able to afford to keep these
current in print format)
You can access the books using the Web from
anywhere
It’s free!
Click the link to access the book
You may need to create a
free account
Here’s the book!
If MPC doesn’t have anything,
you can search other libraries
by going to
“Links to Other Libraries”
For example…
This book is at Salinas
Public Library, and we can
request it for you by “ILL” or
Interlibrary Loan
