Possible topics: Myth vs. Reality Choose a Topic that interests you! Brainstorm a list of keywords for your topic: Topic ideas (myth or image vs. reality): Career in forensic science Teen pregnancy Gangs / gangster life Think of broad and narrow keywords: BROAD CSI Pregnancy Gangs NARROW “Crime scene investigation” AND career Teens OR adolescents AND pregnancy “street crime” AND gangs Use Alternate words for the same general topic: CSI, crime, criminal, investigation, “forensic scientist(s)” career, “vocational guidance” “teen pregnancy,” “Juno effect,” teenagers, adolescents, pregnancy, parenthood, “birth control, ”contraception, gangs, gangsters, Crips, Bloods, MS-13, “Mara Salvatrucha,” “drug trafficking,” Michoacan You have your topic, you have some keywords, and you’re ready to find information… where do you begin? Ask your friends? Ask your instructor? Watch TV? (you can hope “60 Minutes” or “Dateline” will cover your topic) Google it? Search a database? Most people go right to the Internet/Web Let’s Look at Some Websites: RYT Hospital-DeWayne Medical Center Martin Luther King Dihydrogen Monoxide As a Researcher, You Need to Critically Evaluate All Websites !! What about wikipedia?? From the blog Use it as a RESOURCE and not a SOURCE, and definitely not as your sole source! So, what about wikipedia?? What does that mean? Click HERE to see some interesting information about wikipedia Use wikipedia as a RESOURCE, NOT AS A SOURCE Some instructors will not allow wikipedia as a source…but the sources listed at the end of wikipedia articles can be GREAT places to look for sources of information. ???????????????? If the web isn’t totally reliable, how can you use the Internet for research and know that what you are looking at is reliable / true / authoritative?? MPC pays a license fee for REFERENCE DATABASES, including some that are excellent for topics such as these Let’s look briefly at one of these! Let’s look at doing online research Using the REFERENCE DATABASE “Academic Search Premier” Academic Search Premier is one of the databases for which MPC pays a license fee to a company called EBSCO. (Sometimes the databases are referred to as “EBSCO or EBSCOHost). A.S.P. provides full text for more than 4,500 journals, including full text for more than 3,700 peer-reviewed titles (includes professional journals and topical/specialty journals) Let’s look at a sample search… To choose a periodical database, go to our webpage and click on Alphabetical List of Databases and FullText Articles. www.mpc.edu/library Select Alphabetical List of Databases and Full-Text Articles How do we access the databases? Scroll down to select “Alphabetical List of Databases and Full-text Articles” This is a List of some of the online sources available through the MPC Library. If you are off campus you will be asked to enter a valid library card number Search Screen of Academic Search Premier Enter your search terms here. If you want fulltext articles ONLY, click here. If you only want scholarly journals, click here. Some articles are full-text but not all of them. Result List Search results default to DATE You may want to select RELEVANCE in the drop-down menu Let’s Do an Exercise! Explore limiters, options You may print for free in this classroom. Return to tables in 10 minutes. Look for “Video Tutorials” Link What About Finding a Book ? Under “Books & More” click on “Online Catalog” Quick search screen: Search for “teen pregnancy” We use the Library of Congress Classification system (used by most academic libraries). This is the book’s “CALL NUMBER” Results list MPC has many thousands of books available online The collections include up-to-date material on general subjects and technical topics (we would not be able to afford to keep these current in print format) You can access the books using the Web from anywhere It’s free! Click the link to access the book You may need to create a free account Here’s the book! If MPC doesn’t have anything, you can search other libraries by going to “Links to Other Libraries” For example… This book is at Salinas Public Library, and we can request it for you by “ILL” or Interlibrary Loan If you have any questions please ask a librarian!!
