Many possible topics related to ADDICTION QUESTION: Is addiction a choice? Or a disease? Choose a Topic that interests you! Brainstorm a list of keywords for your topic: Topic ideas (related to addiction): Drugs / alcohol Compulsive gambling Internet Addiction Food, shopping, sex Think of broad and narrow keywords: BROAD Drugs Internet NARROW “prescription drugs” AND addiction “Video games” OR “online gaming” AND addiction Use Alternate words for the same general topic: Drugs, alcohol, methamphetamine, “medicinal marijuana,” “recreational drugs,” “fetal alcohol syndrome, “prescription drugs” (also slang or street names of specific drugs) Addiction, compulsive (“compulsive shopping” or “compulsive gambling”) or compulsion Internet, online, “Facebook addiction,” “Online gambling” Once you have your topic, and you have some keywords, and you’re ready to find information … where do you begin? Ask your friends? Ask your instructor? Watch TV? (you can hope “60 Minutes” or Dateline” will cover your topic) Google it? Search a database? Most people go right to the Internet/Web Let’s Look at Some Websites: RYT Hospital-DeWayne Medical Center Martin Luther King Dihydrogen Monoxide As a Researcher, You Need to Critically Evaluate All Websites !! What about wikipedia?? From the blog So, what about wikipedia?? Use it as a RESOURCE and not a SOURCE, and definitely not as your sole source! What does that mean? • Some instructors will not allow wikipedia as a source…but the sources listed at the end of wikipedia articles can be GREAT places to look for sources of information. Use wikipedia as a RESOURCE, NOT AS A SOURCE ???????????????? Soooooo… If the web isn’t totally reliable, how can you use the Internet for research and know that what you are looking at is reliable / true / authoritative?? MPC pays a license fee for REFERENCE DATABASES, including some that are excellent for topics such as these Let’s look briefly at one of these! Let’s look at doing online research Using the REFERENCE DATABASE “Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center” Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center is one of the databases for which MPC pays a license fee OVRC provides full text for more than 4,500 journals, including full text for more than 3,700 peer-reviewed titles (includes professional journals and topical/specialty journals) Let’s look at a sample search… How do we access the databases?
