How about law enforcement and drunk driving? HOW TO APPROACH YOUR RESEARCH Brainstorm AREAs you might research: Examples: crimes against children police dogs forensic science Then, narrow your focus: “crime victims” AND children “Jessica’s Law” Dogs OR canine AND police OR investigation “DNA testing” “bloodstain pattern analysis” YOU HAVE YOUR TOPIC, YOU HAVE SOME KEYWORDS, AND YOU’RE READY TO FIND INFORMATION…WHERE DO YOU BEGIN? Ask your friends? Ask your instructor? Watch TV? (you can hope “60 Minutes” or “Dateline” will cover your topic) Google it? Search a database? Most people go right to the Internet/Web LET’S LOOK AT A COUPLE OF WEBSITES: RYT Hospital-DeWayne Medical Center Martin Luther King As a Researcher, You Need to Critically Evaluate All Websites !! What about wikipedia?? From the blog SO, WHAT ABOUT WIKIPEDIA?? Click HERE to see some interesting information about wikipedia Use it as a RESOURCE and not a SOURCE, and definitely not as your sole source! What does that mean? USE WIKIPEDIA AS A RESOURCE, NOT AS A SOURCE Some instructors will not allow wikipedia as a source…but the sources listed at the end of wikipedia articles can be GREAT places to look for sources of information. HOW TO USE THE INTERNET WITH ASSURANCE YOUR SITES ARE RELIABLE? While the general web apparently is not always reliable, there IS a way you can use the Internet for research and be assured the sources are valid/authoritative MPC pays license fees for REFERENCE DATABASES that are available to you as students of the college. ???????????????? Your fees help support the cost of license fees for these REFERENCE DATABASES that are excellent resources. As part of the “Invisible Web,” these sites are often not found with traditional search engines, but are EXTREMELY valuable. One example is Opposing Viewpoints. Let’s take a look! SUBJECT SEARCH FOR “DEATH PENALTY” Can also select a topic from the list, e.g. “capital punishment” SEARCH RESULTS : SOME HAVE AUDIO FILES (MP3) How do we access the databases?
