HOW DO I WRITE THE SPEECH??? STEP BY STEP INTRODUCTION ¾ Begin with a hook ¾ Tell a story or Ask a question ¾ STATE YOUR TOPIC STATE MAIN IDEA (FIRST REASON) And SUPPORT WITH EVIDENCE ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ anecdotes facts expert opinion statistics surveys ¾ • interviews EXAMPLE of a SPEECH ¾ Show pictures of young woman in military gear in war ¾ This is my cousin Tiffany. She is in the Air Force. She has made many tours to combat zones in the Middle East. When she is on a mission, she cannot let her family know exactly where she is. She joined the Air Force when she was 20 years old. She is 24 now. ¾ SHOULD WOMEN ENGAGE IN COMBAT? NO WAY!! First of all, it goes against the public interest. The official US policy states that Congress bans servicewomen from engaging in direct ground combat. "The American people have never wanted to have women in combat," says U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Women are seen as the caretakers, the head of the household, the mothers and nurturers. These are not the people that we want to be putting their lives at risk!! Therefore, women should never be on the front lines. STATE MAIN IDEA (SECOND REASON) And SUPPORT WITH EVIDENCE ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ anecdotes facts expert opinion statistics surveys interviews STATE MAIN IDEA (THIRD REASON) And SUPPORT WITH EVIDENCE ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ anecdotes facts expert opinion statistics surveys ¾ • interviews Second, women are smaller in size than men. My cousin is 5’3” tall. She is small in size. She can easily be picked up and carried away somewhere. If a soldier is taken captive, they can be tortured…. What would happen to a female soldier? I don’t want my cousin to get hurt. The third reason why women should not be allowed to engage in war is : Soldiers who have served in war are susceptible to PTSD - Post traumatic stress disorder Knowing that the military does not deal with this very well for male soldiers, how will they address the special concerns of female soldiers? Jessica Lynch and Shoshana Johnson were taken captive back in 2001 in Iraq. The story of their capture made national and worldwide news. It was well-publicized. When Shoshana was released, she was decorated with many medals of honor. However, when she returned, she suffered from PTSD and had to fight to get the help that she needed from the military. Fortunately, for Shoshana she was treated well by her captors. She had been shot in both ankles, but she received medical care. However, she still suffers flashbacks and trauma. Even Shoshana Johnson, a well-decorated soldier had to fight to get the medical treatment and therapy that she needed from the military. Do I want my cousin to have to go through that? No way!! CONCLUSION ¾ ¾ ¾ restate your position briefly summarize points end with a memorable statement ¾ or quotation In conclusion, I strongly believe that women should not engage in military combat. 1) It’s against the American public interest 2) Women are physically smaller than men 3) The military will not provide the medical treatment for any trauma that they may suffer. A wise man said “Women are precious treasures.” Do we want to put our precious treasure on the battlefield? Thank you.
