The Campbell Program
Within the Exercise Science department at Campbell University,
we provide a variety of options for students. The seven majors we
offer are:
• Athletic Training: This major prepares you to complete the Board
of Certification (BOC) Exam and pursue a career as a Certified
Athletic Trainer. Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation
of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), the Athletic Training
Education Program (ATEP) engages students in both formal
instruction and clinical application providing hands-on experience
in a broad range of practice settings. Should you choose not to
take the BOC Exam, you will be well prepared to pursue graduate
education in another exercise science or allied health profession
such as physical therapy, occupational therapy or strength and
conditioning specialist.
• Exercise and Sport Science: This major allows you to plan your own
curriculum of exercise science-related courses in combination with
other areas such as science, business, psychology or communication
studies. This major is designed for students with more flexible
goals. Or for students who have an interest in sports but do not
want to become physical education teachers or clinicians in allied
health or exercise physiology related occupations.
• Fitness Wellness Management: This program is for those desiring
to prepare for management positions in commercial or corporate
health clubs and fitness centers. Entrepreneurs who want to go
into business for themselves in areas such as personal training or
athletic performance coaching, will find this major a good fit.
For more information about the program contact:
[email protected]
Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) National
Standards for Sport Coaches. Sport coaching internships are the
capstone of the major and provide students with the opportunity
to practice the skills learned in the classroom. Students aspiring to
coach at the college level will find this major a good step forward
along the path toward graduate school and their masters degree.
• Sport Management: Prepares you to work on the business side
of sport or leisure services including professional sport teams,
college athletic departments, sport communication and public
relations firms, sport agencies, health and fitness facilities, parks
and recreation organizations. Our Sport Management students
are required to do a six credit internship which provides them
real-world experience in the field. In addition to starting their
career right after graduation, our Sport Management students
may choose to go on to graduate or professional programs in law
or business.
The Campbell student
We have approximately 200 students within the department which
are evenly distributed across the areas of study. A typical upperlevel major class averages about 15–20 students, ensuring personal
attention and creating discussion oriented environments. Many of
our majors are student-athletes. If you are a student-athlete, you will
discover that your department of Exercise Science instructors, most
of whom were college student-athletes themselves, understand the
unique challenges facing college athletes.
• Health and Physical Education: This major is for those who want
to teach and/or coach. The Teacher Education Option allows
qualified students to earn a state license to teach health and
physical education in grades K-12.
• Kinesiology: This major prepares students for science and medicinerelated graduate programs for careers in physical therapy, medicine,
biomechanics, exercise physiology and other related fields. Should
you choose not to attend graduate school, you would be well
prepared for an array of careers such as Certified Clinical Exercise
Specialist, or Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist. Many
students who graduate from our Kinesiology major also choose
to go onto graduate and professional programs such as Physical
Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Medical School.
• Sport Coaching: The sport coaching major is designed to prepare
the student to coach at the youth league, elementary, middle, and
high school levels. Course work is endorsed by the American Sport
Education Program (ASEP) and compliant with the National
