IS&T Standard for Administrator Access to Workstations 1. Scope Local workstation administrator access is regularly provided to employees who work in Information Technology (IT). Certain additional employees may also be granted workstation administrator access. There is a Policy on Workstation Use and Security that contains requirements for all users, and some requirements for workstation administrators. This standard expands on that policy, providing additional detailed requirements for workstation administrators. 2. References 2.1. Information Technology (IT) – the information technology function in all UMDNJ entities: schools, units, Central Administration departments, Libraries and Public Safety. 4. Standard 4.1. Workstation administrators should refrain from altering or removing any standard software that was originally installed by IT support staff. 4.2. Workstation administrators shall not download software that is illegal or not licensed for use onto University owned equipment. 4.3. Workstation administrators shall refrain from installing software not compatible with the workstation's operating system. 4.4. Workstation administrators shall remove non-standard software that monopolizes workstation processor power, resulting in noticeable system slowdown or degradation of performance. 4.5. Workstation administrators shall not install software that establishes network share protocols which result in an increase in network bandwidth utilization. 4.6. IT support staff shall not troubleshoot or repair non-standard software. IT support staff shall remove non-standard software as part of a normal repair process if necessary to restore system functionality.
