We have finished the second marking period, as well as wrapped up the first semester of distribution February 12: Class Valentine’s Day Party 2:20-3:30 February 15: NO SCHOOL! Yahoo!! We have also been very busy testing on MClass, gathering data on the wonderful progress that the students have made with their reading skills. The third marking period is off to a great start and we are excited to see the growth and progress each student has made so far this year. As the winter months and inclement weather continue we ask that you still complete homework with your child each night. We know there may be snow days or delays, but it is important your child still completes their homework assignment for that day. Homework is a valuable tool to Curriculum Connections Melissa Price [email protected] Reading Contents Important February News 1 Curriculum Connections Reading 1 Writing 2 Math 2 Science & Social Studies 2 Our literature focuses for the month of February is: Retelling familiar stories Identifying story elements Sorting common objects into categories Compare and contrast experiences of characters in stories Identify verbs and antonyms Please continue to practice the Kindergarten sight words. It is reinforce concepts taught at school and will keep their minds fresh if there are missed school days due to snow. Each class will have their Valentine’s Day party Friday afternoon, February 12th from 2:20-3:00. Please contact your child’s teacher if you would like to help in any way. As the winter is upon us, so are our sniffles and colds. Our team is in need of hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes, and tissues. If you would please send these items to your child’s teacher it would be a great help. Thank you, The Kindergarten Team important that your child is able to recognize these words in text and be able to spell them correctly. Knowing these words will make your child’s reading stronger and more fluid. Later in the month we will switch over to non-fiction texts and identifying main topics. We ask for you to continue to read with your child each night and review the high frequency words we have introduced so far this year. 2 Reminder: Writing Students are working on becoming more independent writers and writing multiple sentences that go together. This month our focuses will include: Reviewing Conventions: correct use of spacing, capital/ lowercase letters, and punctuation. Writing a narrative of a single event with loosely linked events Identifying and using nouns in our writing Using descriptive words in their writing We are down to the second half of our Kindergarten year. Please check with your child and see how they are doing with their personal supplies. Many of us need new crayons. Please continue to let your child write for themselves on their homework assignments. It is important for them to practice proper handwriting and start to word stretch independently. We have started our third marking period with representing different arrangements of up to 10. Decomposing numbers up to 10 into two parts. shapes Identify the attributes of the different shapes Comparing 2D shapes and relating 2D shapes to real world objects Composing 2D shapes Describing and compare 2-3D shapes and composing 2-3 dimensional shapes As the quarter progresses we will be moving forth with our exploration with Geometry. We will: Identify 2D and 3D Social Studies & Science Our social studies focus for the month will include: Wants and needs Jobs Goods and Services Recognizing human resources as people who make or grow goods and provide services Our main focus this month is science is our mealworm unit. Students will continue observing their mealworms. Through class observations and lessons students will learn the parts of a mealworm, what they need to live and survive, and the life cycle of a mealworm. Student will continue to practice being good scientists, by asking questions, making observations, and investigating their mealworms, pupas, and darkling beetles. We are also studying habitats of local animals. While you are out on walks or drives encourage a discussion about habitats. You will be surprised!! your shoes.
