What will First Graders be learning in March? Reading/Language Arts Students will: Explore the “l” blends. Use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas. Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. Distinguish shades of meaning among verbs and adjectives differing in intensity by defining or choosing them or by acting out the meanings. Identify who is telling the story at various points in a text. Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story or poem using a graphic organizer. Compare and contrast the experiences of characters. Writing Students will: Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. Write an opinion paragraph in which they state their opinion, give reasons, and provide closure. Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure. Math Social Studies and Science Students will: Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation to make the equation true. Create a word problem about an addition or subtraction situation and with unknown numbers in different positions. Add any 2-digit number and a 2-digit number ending in zero and subtract two 2-digit numbers ending in zero. Add a 2-digit number and a 1-digit number using models or drawings and describe the strategy used. In Science, students will identify objects and materials in the environment, and recognize that caring about the environment is an important human activity. In Social Studies, students will describe places on earth using geographic characteristics, and explain how people modify, protect, and adapt to their environment.
