What will First Graders be learning in February? Reading/Language Arts Students will: Use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas. Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. Describe the connection between ideas or pieces of information in a text. Distinguish shades of meaning among verbs and adjectives differing in intensity by defining or choosing them or by acting out the meanings. Identify who is telling the story at various points in a text. Describe characters, settings and major events in a story using a story organizer. Writing Students will: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, provide some facts about the topic and provide some sense of closure. Participate in shared research and writing projects. Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage, capitalization, punctuation and spelling when writing. Write an opinion paragraph in which they state their opinion, give reasons and provide closure. Math Social Studies and Science Students will: Measure and compare length with nonstandard units. Measure length using multiple copies of a nonstandard unit. Measure length using one copy of a unit repeatedly. Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making 10 (8+6=8+2+4=10+4=14); decompose a number leading to a 10 ( 13-4=13-3-1=10-1=9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (knowing that 8+4=12, one knows that 12-4=8); and create equivalent but easier or known sums (adding 6+7 by creating the known equivalent 6+6+1=12+1=13). In Science, students will identify aspects of the environment that are made by humans and those that are not made by humans. They will also compare the observable properties of a variety of objects and the materials they are made of using evidence from investigations. In Social Studies, students will describe places on earth using geographic characteristics and explain how people modify, protect and adapt to their environment.
