What will First Graders be learning in February?
Reading/Language Arts
Students will:
 Use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas.
 Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or
phrase.
 Describe the connection between ideas or pieces of information in
a text.
 Distinguish shades of meaning among verbs and adjectives
differing in intensity by defining or choosing them or by acting out
the meanings.
 Identify who is telling the story at various points in a text.
 Describe characters, settings and major events in a story using a
story organizer.
Writing




Students will:
Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic,
provide some facts about the topic and provide some sense of
closure.
Participate in shared research and writing projects.
Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English
grammar and usage, capitalization, punctuation and spelling when
writing.
Write an opinion paragraph in which they state their opinion, give
reasons and provide closure.
Math
Social Studies and Science
Students will:





Measure and compare length with nonstandard units.
Measure length using multiple copies of a nonstandard unit.
Measure length using one copy of a unit repeatedly.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency within 10.
Use strategies such as counting on; making 10
(8+6=8+2+4=10+4=14); decompose a number leading to a 10
( 13-4=13-3-1=10-1=9); using the relationship between addition
and subtraction (knowing that 8+4=12, one knows that 12-4=8);
and create equivalent but easier or known sums (adding 6+7 by
creating the known equivalent 6+6+1=12+1=13).
 In Science, students will identify aspects of the environment that
are made by humans and those that are not made by humans.
They will also compare the observable properties of a variety of
objects and the materials they are made of using evidence from
investigations.
 In Social Studies, students will describe places on earth using
geographic characteristics and explain how people modify, protect
and adapt to their environment.

already to help pay for the party supplies. Also,
please send your children with their valentines on
Friday morning ready for distribution. Thanks!
 We would like to recommend that you dress your
children in layers. This allows them to adjust to the
temperature as needed.
