What will First Graders be learning in October? Reading/Language Arts Students will ask and answer questions about key details in an informational text. They will ask and answer questions to help determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text. Math Students will use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations with adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing with unknowns in all positions using objects, drawings and equations. Students will organize, represent, and interpret data with up to 3 categories. Compare 2-digit numbers based on meanings of the tens and ones digits, using >,<,or =. Writing Students will be writing explanatory texts in which they name a topic, write some facts and provide closure. They will write an opinion piece in which they introduce the topic, state their opinion, supply a reason for their opinion and provide a closure. Social Studies and Science Students will identify and describe people and symbols and practices associated with the United States of America. Describe some ways in which animals depend on plants and each other. Describe evidence from investigations that living things are made up of parts too small to be seen by the unaided eye. Provide evidence that all organisms are made up of parts that help them carry out all basic functions of life.
