What will First Graders be learning in September? Reading/Language Arts Students will: Retell stories, including key details. Describe characters, setting, and major events in a story using key details. Listen for the short vowel sounds for a,e,i,o, and u and correctly identify words that do or do not contain them. Math Students will: Count by 1s and 10s to 120 (including one more and one less). Read and write numerals to 120. Understand that the 2 digits of a 2-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones. Compare 2-digit numbers based on the meanings of the tens and ones digits and use >,>, or = to record the comparisons. Given a 2-digit number, mentally find 10 more or 10 less than the number, without having to count, explain the reasoning used. Writing Students will: Create a topic list and choose a topic to write a narrative, including 2 or more sequenced events. Social Studies and Science In Social Studies, students will be learning about Good Citizenship (rules, laws and individual responsibilities at school, home and in the community.) In Science, students will study the basic needs of plants and animals in our environment.
