Basic Fact Strategies

Second Grade Quarter 1 Math Instructional Strategies
Fact Strategies
During this year, students develop fluency with addition and subtraction within 20. By the end of Marking
Period 4, students are expected to know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers. Below are some
strategies students may use for deriving facts.
Commutative Property
or “Turn Around” Rule
Make 10
e.g. 8+7
5+3 is the same as 3+5.
8+7 = 8+2+5
10
Fact Families
Count On/Count Up
6 + 7 = 13
13
7 + 6 = 13
+,6
13 − 7 = 6
+ 5 = 15
7
Without Chunking
e.g. 7+2 (Count….8, 9 so, 7+2=9)
e.g. 15-9 (Count…10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 since
there were 6 counts, 15-9=6)
With Chunking
e.g. 15-9 [Count +1 (up to 10)+5 (up to 15)]
13 − 6 = 7
+5
+1
15
9
Doubles and Near Double
Doubles
e.g. 4+4=8
Count Back
e.g. 11-4
Count backwards… 10, 9, 8, 7
Near Doubles
e.g. 4+5
7
+1
4 + 4 = 8 and 8 + 1 = 9

Note: Many students find counting backwards
to be more difficult for subtraction than using
counting on strategies for subtraction.
