=WELCOME TO FIRST GRADE + Open House 2015 Ms. Pollard’s Class A little bit about me . . . T his is my fifteenth year teaching. T his will be my eighth year teaching first grade at Lovett Elementary. I taught first & second grade at Hidden Hollow Elementary in Kingwood, Texas for six years. I also taught first grade at Pine Ridge Elementary in Livingston, Texas for a year. Curriculum Math–Follow Math in Focus and math workstations with small group support. Science & Social Studies – follows HISD curriculum **integrated into other subjects Language Arts –guided reading, shared reading, read alouds, high frequency words, spelling, Writer’s Workshop, and poetry DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) ♥ ♥ ♥ DRA is the tool we use to organize guided reading groups. We group students based on their reading level. DRA test the students’ reading engagement, oral reading fluency, and comprehension. At the end of first grade, your child is expected to be on a DRA Level 20. Promotional Standards ♥ ♥ Grades – must be passing on final report card High Frequency Word Evaluation – multiple opportunities to pass (flash cards will be sent home) Homework A homework packet will be given out Monday to be returned on Friday. T he packet will include a home reading page for parents to record nightly reading. Return the homework in the green homework folder. Students are also expected to read for at least 20 minutes every night. Be sure to record it on your provided reading calendar. Book bag ♥ Please remind your child to bring their book bag to school everyday! T hank you!! Conduct Fresh start every day Averaged at the end of the week & sent in the conduct folder on Fridays. Please return folder on Mondays. Conduct can affect field trip eligibility. Folders Homework Folder-sent home on Monday with Homework, return on Friday. You may unattached the monthly reading calendar & send it back on the last day of the month. Wednesday Folder-sent home with school wide information, return on T hursday. If you choose to not receive a folder, you will find all of the Wednesday Folder information on the PTO website. T here’s a link to the PTO website on my website. Conduct Folder-sent home on Friday with conduct and graded work, return signed on Monday. Also, please sign & return all graded work. Conduct Grades ♥ Daily grade… E-95 ♥ S-85 ♥ P-75 ♥ U-65 ♥ ♥ Weekly average… E-93-100 ♥ S-83-92 ♥ P-73-82 ♥ U-72 and below ♥ Fine Arts & P.E. Monday – Music Tuesday – Art Wednesday –Music T hursday and Friday – P.E. *Wear tennis shoes on P.E. days & bring water. Parties ♥ Two class parties – volunteers needed (Winter and End of the Year parties) Birthdays – Treats will be served at the end of the day (at recess) Please send napkins with the birthday treats! Recess Snack ♥ ♥ Your child is welcome to bring a snack to eat at recess. Please encourage your child to bring water daily! Money Please send correct amount. Attach all money to the document or form that it pertains to. Lunch money should be put on a lunch card. You can pay online with a credit card or pay cash in the cafeteria. Scholastic Book Orders Every month I will be sending home Scholastic book orders. You will find books of every reading level. For your convenience, I will provide our classroom activation code so you can go onto Scholastics website and order your child’s books using your credit card! Our class activation code is GMRBZ. Communication Email is the best way to contact me. Please email all questions about Fine Arts or P.E. to those staff members. All email addresses can be found on the Lovett Website. Absences and Tardies You have 3 days to send an excuse note to the classroom teacher. After 8 unexcused absences your child is in danger of being retained. 7 tardies lowers your conduct & magnet students’ enrollment can be affected by low conduct Peacock of the Week On Wednesdays, I will pull a ticket from the jar to see who will be Peacock of the Week (Student of the Week) for the following week. In their Wednesday Folder, I will include the poster instructions. T he weekend before your child is Peacock of the Week, they will take George the Giraffe home and write from his point of view. V.I.P.S. Please register for V.I.P.S. in the front office. ***It must be renewed every year!!*** Lost and Found Please be sure to write your child’s name on everything they bring to school.
