Exacting atention to perspective and size of images are
critical to achieving an accurate photo-composite. On this
project a detailed area map was used to calculate the exact
distance from the site to the city beyond; and the distance
from the site to the point where the sky line was
photographed. This measurement made it possible to
establish the ratio between the distance and the actual
height of the proposed new project. The same height to
distance ratio was applied to the model height to determine
the distance from which to photograph it. The angle of view
was based on the city map, and the model was positioned
to match the angle of the city photograph. These two
resulting photographs were then accurately aligned and
made to the correct size. The combined photograph
containing both site and model was then re-touched and
made into a presentation transparency and color side.

Full scale realism is usually appropriate for
projects planned in urban settings. Here the
actual relationship between site and building and
neighboring structures is of prime importance.
One technique for achieving a high sense of
realism and accuracy of scale, is to use
photographs superimposed over actual sites.
The photos can either be of colored renderings
or of architectural models. Whichever method is
used, it must be prepared with the same vantage
point and perspective angles as the original
photo.

Concepts in façade renovation are easily
expressed in frontal views. But if the project
covers several blocks in a small urban area, you
might turn to photography for assistance. These
elevations were drawn to the correct scale and
configuration by tracing over individual photos
taken of each building. The detail was very
apparent and extremely accurate. Presentation
drawings were made from these photographs by a
simple overlay technique. The scale of the original
photodrawings is kept large so that the scale is
sufficient to record all detailed notes.

There are several methods that are used tom
deceipt this structure in the early stages of
preliminary design. There was the traditional set of
rendered elevations and an aerial axonometric. In
addition, there was a low level aerial color
rendering, which outlined the building form. Finally,
there was a fully detailed three-dimensional design
model that showed the relationship of the building
to the existing medical structures on the site.
Photographs of the completed building from
ground level emphasized the unusual features of
the design.
