Summer Mathematics Packet- Second Grade
Farmland Elementary
Summer Math Packet
For students completing second grade
Student Name ______________________________________________
Dear Families,
In this packet you will find math activities to help maintain and review
math skills learned in 2nd grade. It will also prepare your child for 3rd grade
math concepts. Summer math packets for all grade levels will be available on
the Farmland website as well. These activities are varied and are meant to
show how much fun and relevant math can be in everyday life. We ask that you
check over your child’s work to see that he/she is working accurately. We hope
that your child will complete the packet and return it when the new school
year begins so that he/she can be recognized as one of our outstanding
summer mathletes!

Week 1: Basic Facts
Basic facts are important for computation throughout your child’s academic career.
Thought for the week: Math is FUN!
1. Write the whole numbers in digits and words from 1 – 100 on any fun paper you
choose. (For example- 1 one, 2 two, …) Create a pattern or collage of the numbers and
words.
2. Write your ordinal numbers from 1-20. Remember after thirds, most end in “th”. (First,
second, third, fourth, …)
3. Choose some links from “Math Websites from Curriculum 2.0 2011-2012” (back page of
this packet) and practice your basic facts.
4. Using the information below and the blank graphs on the next page, construct a bar
graph and pictograph. Remember your graph must be labeled, have a title, have a key
and start with the number 0!
Favorite Ice Cream Flavors in Room 233

These two areas compose a large portion of second grade math and need to be reviewed
throughout the summer to remember the logic and operations.
Thought for the week: Numbers are Everywhere!
1. Complete the addition problems below. Most of these problems require composing a
ten. (Be sure to rewrite the problems vertically so that they are easier to solve!)

Week 4: Fractions and Partitioning Shapes
Being able to partition shapes and understand fractional parts is important.
Thought for the week: Sharing is Great!
1. Cut 4 strips of paper the same length. Make one strip the WHOLE. Fold one strip to
make HALVES. Fold one strip to make THIRDS. Fold one strip to make FOURTHS.
Lay the strips one under the other with the WHOLE on top. Compare the sizes of
each part and answer the questions belowWhich is larger- one WHOLE or one-half? Why?
Which is larger- one-third or one-fourth? Why?
Which is smaller- one-third or one-half? Why?
Which is smaller- one-half or one-fourth? Why?
2. Cynthia was having a pizza party for her birthday. She invited 3 friends to her party.
She ordered one large pizza that had 12 slices. All the girls got the same number of
slices. How many slices did each girl receive? Draw the pizza with 12 slices and then
partition it into the correct number of shares.
3. Color each circle to match the fraction under it.
1/2
2/3
3/4
4/6
4. Complete this activity with your parents.
First, take an orange and cut it in half. How many pieces do you have?
Second, cut each orange piece in half again. How many pieces do you have now?
If you eat one piece now, what fraction of the orange will you eat?
Oranges are good for you so go ahead and enjoy the rest of your healthy snack!

example, a set/carton of eggs).

Week 5: Time
Time is very important in our daily lives. Everything revolves around time. Whether it is to
get to work, school, and a play date or catch a plane to grandma’s house, our children must
learn to use time wisely.
Thought for the week: Time Flies!
1. Write the correct time for each of the clocks below.
_______________
_______________
_______________
2. Make a clock of your own from a paper plate and paper clips (or whatever materials
you would like). You must have the hour hand and minute hand as well as the minute
intervals.
3. Make a list of 5 things people have used to tell time throughout human history.

Week 6: Multiplication
Just like addition and subtraction, multiplication and division are opposites.
Multiplication is repeated addition and division is repeated subtraction. Multiplication is
adding numbers in equal groups. Division is dividing numbers into equal groups.
Thought for the week” Opposites!
1. Draw an ARRAY to solve the following multiplication problems.
3x3 =
2x6 =
4x5 =
5x7 =
2. Look at the arrays in the pictures below. Write a multiplication number sentence to
match the array. Be sure to write the answer!

cards did Joe have altogether?
4. Jill measured the 8 sides of a stop sign. Each side was 5 inches long. How many inches
did the edge (perimeter) of the stop sign measure altogether?
5. Draw an array to make the number 25. Remember you must make rows with equal
groups. You must make more than one row.
6. Challenge! Take the array you made in question 5 and divide it into 5 equal groups.
Then answer…
25 ÷ 5 = ________________
Now, explain to an adult how you got your answer. Be sure to include details about
what you did and why.

Week 8: Problem Solving
Problem solving and application is the ability to use known skills to solve problems. This is
important in our everyday lives and shows how math is used constantly.
Thought for the week: You are a problem solver!
Select the problems you can do. Show your work. Be perseverant and ask for help if you
need it.
1. At the fair you get different numbers of points for hitting things with a baseball.

19 points for knocking over a pile of milk bottles

16 points for tumbling down a tower of blocks
17 points for making a mouse fall off a house
13 points for throwing the ball into a hole
11 points for knocking the tail off a wooden monkey
5 points for throwing the ball into a hippo’s mouth




It takes 45 points to win a giant donkey.
What are some ways you can get exactly the right number of points to win a donkey?
2. There was a piñata at Drew's birthday party. The 3 Gonzalez sisters collected 4 packs
of bubblegum that fell from the piñata. When they got home, they decided to split
the 4 packs of gum evenly. They opened each pack and counted 6 pieces of gum in
each.
How can the 3 sisters divide the bubblegum evenly? How do you know?
Extra: What if their mother tells them they must share the packs of gum with their 3
cousins as well? How many pieces would each child get?

3. Anna was at the beach trying to catch minnows with her net. In her first scoop, she
caught 4 minnows. In her second scoop she caught 10 minnows. In the third scoop
she caught 16 minnows.
If the pattern continues, how many minnows will she catch in the fifth scoop?
Extra: How many minnows will she have caught altogether after the fifth scoop?
Explain how you found your answers.
