The students at Jackson Ro ad have gotten o ff to a great start in
physical education. We are very excited to help your child engage in
l ifelong l earning by developing habits to keep themselves healthy throughout
their l ife. Pl ease take a l o ok at what your child should be able to do at
the co nclusion o f the first marking period.
Pre-K and Grade K




Perform the locomotor skills of walking, running, hopping, jumping, sliding, and galloping,
in response to a signal.
Move in self-space and general space, in response to a signal.
Identify one site on the body to find the pulse.
Explain how exercise affects the heart.
Grade 1



Perform the locomotor skills of hopping, jumping, galloping, sliding, and skipping, in
response to a signal.
Move forward, backward, and sideways at a high, medium, and low level, in response to a
signal.
Identify that the heart beats faster, the lungs bre ath faster/deeper, and the skin sweats
during and immediately after moderate and vigorous exercise.
Grade 2



Perform the locomotor skills of galloping, sliding, and skipping while moving along in
straight, curved, and zigzag pathways, in response to a signal.
Move right, left, clockwise, and counterclockwise, in response to a signal.
Explain why the heart beats faster, the lungs breath faster/deeper, and the skin sweats
during and immediately after moderate and vigorous exercise.
Grade 3





Dribble with the hands and feet while moving left and right and along straight, curved, and
zigzag pathways, in response to a signal.
Define aerobic activity and apply methods for measuring heart rate.
Identify activities that develop muscular strength and muscular endurance.
Identify activities that develop flexibility.
Assess fitness levels by performing (muscle strength and endurance activities) and
Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run test (PACER)
Grade 4






Perform accurate passes using a chest pass and the inside of the foot.
Identify and define the health-related fitness components of cardio-respiratory endurance,
muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility.
Define resting heart rate, target heart rate, and maximum heart rate.
Differentiate between muscular strength and muscular endurance activities.
Define flexibility and explain why it is important to stretch.

Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run test (PACER)
Grade 5






Perform accurate shooting skills using the hands and feet.
List activities that enhance the health-related components of fitness: cardio-respiratory
endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility.
Examine the warm-up, aerobic, and cool down phases of an aerobic workout and explain
the effects on heart rate.
Explain the difference between muscular strength and muscular endurance.
Define static and dynamic stretching and identify the differences between the two types of
stretching.

prepared for activity ( i.e. so cks and sneakers) o n their physical education
day. If for any reason your child needs to be ex cused from physical
activity for more than o ne cl ass period, pl ease have your physician fill o ut
MCPS Form 3 45-22. Copies o f this form can al so be o btained from the PE
department.
