College Gardens Elementary School Principal’s Updates from School: November 4, 2015 Important For the safety of our students, please be sure to cross Yale Place only at the crosswalk. Reminder The school day begins at 9:25. When you are dropping your child off at school, please remember that we start our day promptly at 9:25. Students are expected to be in their classroom at that time. Financial Support Please send a note to Mrs. Rogovoy if you are in need of financial support for field trips, afterschool clubs, or lunch money. All requests are kept confidential. After School Arrangements Please make all afterschool arrangements prior to the school day. Be sure that your child brings a note to school informing the classroom teacher of any changes for your child’s dismissal. Students who do not have a note from home will be sent home their normal way. Student Led Conferences We are excited to increase collaboration between, student, teacher, and parents this year. We look forward to hearing our students engage with parents and teachers about their learning and goal setting. This will be done through student led conferences. Student led conferences involve the student and the parent. Students are responsible for leading the conference, and also take responsibility for their learning by sharing the process with their parents. During your conference time parents are to bring their child with them to the classroom at which time the student will begin the conference. There will be a planned agenda and will conclude the conference by setting goals with your child. Please bring a food donation with you to the conference for our Thanksgiving food drive in partnership with the City of Rockville. Lost and Found We have already collected many sweatshirts, sweaters, jackets, and other items in our lost and found. The items will be in the front hallway when you come in for your conference, please take a minute to locate anything you are missing. After conferences all items will be donated. Cell Phones According to the Montgomery County Board of Education Regulation COG-RA, Elementary school students are not permitted to possess or use portable communication devices (cell phones) on MCPS campuses or at MCPS sponsored school activities, except by a written request for a waiver from a parent or guardian and upon the approval of the principal. If a waiver is approved the cell phone may not be used on school property, during after school activities, at lunch, on field trips, or while riding an MCPS bus. 10/30/2015 Page 1 College Gardens Elementary School Toys It is important that all students understand the value of their education. Toys may be fun but are a distraction to your child and others. Please keep all toys and electronics safely at home. College Gardens will not be responsible for any items lost, stolen, or left at school. Have you joined the PTA? College Gardens enjoys a strong partnership between home and school. Together, we work to support the education of our students, providing resources, modeling volunteerism, building our strong community and much more. I encourage both our College Gardens Staff and our College Gardens Parents to join our PTA today. Provide Feedback on MCPS’ Choice and Special Academic Programs MCPS is conducting a study of the district’s use of choice and special academic programs that provide options for families to enroll students in schools outside of their home attendance zones. MCPS offers a variety of rigorous, engaging and specialized academic programs for students at all grade levels, such as magnets, language immersion programs, and regional consortia. Some programs are open only to students in the sponsoring schools, while others are open to all students in the county. MCPS parents/guardians will be offered multiple opportunities to be involved in the study and provide feedback on these programs. Parents can complete a short survey online and/or submit their feedback through a comment box. The deadline to complete the survey is Thursday, Oct. 22. More information about the study and the list of Choice and special academic programs is available online at http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/info/choice/.
