Second Grade Newsletter May 2016 Here’s what we will be learning this month: In reading, we will focus on informational texts. We will continue to analyze text features to help us understand the text. We will also read many biographies to gain information about American leaders and the past. In writing, students will research a leader and write about the important events of their lifetime. We will use this research to write a paragraph about the leader. We will continue to emphasize correct capitalization and punctuation when we are writing. At this time of the year, second graders should be using capital letters appropriately. In math, we will continue to focus on addition and subtraction within 1000. Students will develop written methods and explain their reasoning with different types of problems using concrete models, drawings, place value strategies, and written methods. Students will work on composing and decomposing tens and hundreds while adding and subtracting. In science, students have been observing the life cycle of a Painted Lady Butterfly. Most of our caterpillars are currently in a chrysalis form and we are eagerly awaiting a butterfly to emerge! During May, we will also begin to observe the life cycle of brine shrimp in the classroom. Finally, we will revisit the phases of the moon and begin to discuss its orbit around the Earth. In social studies, students will work to learn about leaders in America. We will explore the leader’s timeline and read how they have shown effort, motiviation, and persistence to achieve their goals.
