First Grade News April Showers Bring May Flowers April This is such a busy time of year. It always seems when spring begins there is a whirlwind of activities at home and at school. April is the time for blooming, not only outside the classroom, but also inside. We have seen so much growth and maturity, not to mention academic progress and how close we have become as classmates and team members. Please remember to practice basic facts at home. First grade students need to practice the strategies they learned to compute quickly and move on to memorizing the answers. Research shows that this skill is needed to be successful at more advanced math levels. 4/07/16 Reminders: Skills For The Month Reading/Language Arts Identify sensory words and phrases in poems and stories Identify words and phrases that suggest feelings and point of view Compare and contrast character’s feelings Ask questions about key details in stories Writing Write poetry and narrative stories to include details to describe events Revise stories to include adjectives Math Identify strategies to add and subtract multiples of ten and 2-digit #s (written method) Identify strategies to add multiples of ten and 1-digit #s (written method) Science Identify how natural resources satisfy human wants and needs Identify sources and devices that use electricity Social Studies Identify natural and human resources used to produce a good Identify goods and services provided in the community Explore tools and products that affect the way people live Marking Period 4 T.A.S.S. Skills Please return your child’s “Me On The Map” Project (if you haven’t already). They will be displayed at the Cultural Showcase. The Rose Hill Manor field trip is on Tuesday, May 31st. Permission slips and payment are due the beginning of May. These are the thinking and academic success skills the first grade students will be concentrating on this marking period: Originality (creative thinking skill) Creating ideas and solutions that are novel or unique to the individual, group, or situation. Metacognition (academic success skill) Knowing and being aware of one's own thinking and having the ability to monitor and evaluate one's own thinking.
