Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Delaware Center for the Study of Metals in the Environment (CSME) CSME is a multi-institutional consortium of scientists and engineers working to further the understanding of processes affecting the fate and effects of metals in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Significant gaps in the ability to predict the fate and effects of metals in both aquatic and terrestrial systems hamper appropriate risk assessments and cost-effective risk management. In these situations, decisions include many assumptions and the application of safety factors. The focus of the Center is on developing appropriate information so that regulatory decisions will be based on sound scientific principles. Sponsors include ¾ Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ¾ National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) ¾ International Copper Association (ICA) ¾ European Copper Institute (ECI) ¾ Copper Development Association (CDA) ¾ Nickel Producers Environmental Research Association (NiPERA) ¾ International Council on Mining and Metallurgy (ICMM) ¾ Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) Academic partners include ¾ Colorado School of Mines ¾ University of Missouri-Rolla ¾ University of Delaware ¾ Oklahoma State University ¾ Manhattan College ¾ University of Wyoming ¾ McMaster University Herbert E.
