October 2013 Newsletter Fourth Grade Greencastle ES Reading Students are reading informational texts. Many of these readings are based on what we are learning about for Science and Social Studies. One major focus is the use and understanding of text features wit hin our readings and how they are beneficial. Encourage your child to keep reading at least 20 minutes each night. Social Studies Students will focus on the different Native Americ ans and the different regions where they come from. This will help emphasize the importance of, “why do they live there?”. Math We just finished a rigorous focus on place value. This includes place, value of a number, and writing number in different ways. Students still use these strategies to work on their addition and subtraction skills. Students are also developing new strategies to apply to solving these problems with number up to ONE MILLION! Some students have started pull out groups with Mr. Young. Science We are continuing with our science unit on Ecosystems. The ecosystems are set up and students will be learning about interactions within the ecosystem, matter and energy in the ecosystem, and survival. IMPORTANT Writing Students are workin g on two pieces of writing. Writing an opinion and giving facts to back it up is one. The other is writin g a narrative DATES October 18 No school November 1 No school for students. Have Agenda signed every night for homework The 4 R’s for Homework: Read for 20 minutes each night. Review— homework is meant as a review of concepts already covered in class. Run—kids need play and exercise! Rest— a good night’s sleep makes for an alert student.
