What’s Happening in Third G rade?! Important Dates in the
Month of May..
The month of November
brings many exciting learning opportunities for our
students. They use evaluation to weigh evidence, examine evidence, and question fac ts to make judgments based upon criteria.
They use metacognition , an
academic succ ess skill, to
know and be aware of their
own thinking and selfmonitor to evaluate their
thinking.
In math, we continue with
multiplication and division
within 100. Students continue to develop an understanding of the meanings of multiplication and division of
whole numbers through
tasks and pr oblem solving
involving equal sized groups,
arrays, area models, problem situations, and equations. Students use increasingly sophisticated strate-
gies such as the properties
of oper ations and the relationship between multiplication and division to solve multiplication and division problems inv olving single-digit
factors.
In reading, students examine how events unfold and
how theme is developed in
poetr y. They discuss how
poets c onvey point of view
or theme and engage the
reader using literal and nonliteral language suc h as similes and metaphors. They
also draw on knowledge of
story structure to analyze
plays.
In writing, students use a
compare and contr ast text
structure to organize ideas.
They draw on prior
knowledge about using descriptive techniques to emphasize a message to compose different texts. They

In science and social studies, students learn about
the role of basic infr astructure in developing and expanding cities in Social Studies. In Science, they investigate actions and pr ocesses
that cause physical changes.

folder each day.
Parents, please
make sure that
your child is
reading each
night for at
least thirty
minutes. Also,
it’s time to
learn those
basic multiplication facts.
