Second Grade News

This Month’s News!
In Reading, we will be reading literary to describe how characters respond to
major events and challenges, recount key details, compare characters points of
points of view to recognize differences, and determine the meaning of unknown
words using a variety of strategies. We will also identify rhythm and meaning in
poems and identify adjectives, adverbs to explain how they help readers
understand. At the end of the month, we will compare the most important points
from two texts on the same topic, use text features to understand scientific ideas,
and identify the main idea of informational texts.
In Math, we will use standard units (centimeters, meters, inches, and feet) and
nonstandard units (paperclips, thumb, pencils, etc.) to measure the length of
objects. As students learn to measure they will begin to estimate and measure
length using appropriate measurement tools. We will also use addition and
subtraction to solve two step word problems, including word problems with
lengths. Next, tell and write time from analog and digital clocks, partition shapes
in different ways to show equal shares. Please continue to have your child work on
strategies when adding basic facts (making 10, making doubles, doubles +1…)!
In Social Studies, we will learn about how technology and transportation affects
our life in the past and present! We will also natural, capital, and human
resources and making economical informed decisions.
In Writer’s Workshop, we have been practicing good writing skills by working on
opinion pieces. They will introduce the topic and supply supporting reasons,
Students will work on implementing facts, linking words, commas, adjectives, etc.
We will continue using a paragraph structure (topic sentence, three details, and
conclusion) to respond to comprehension questions and use the text to find
details to support our answer. We will continue to practice good writing skills!
In Science, we have begun learning about how plants, moons change overtime.
We will identify and describe the basic needs of minute and larger organisms.
