Academic Success Skills
Our critical thinking
focus will be analysis -
2nd Grade News
In Reading, we will focus on informational text to determine
the author’s purpose for writing a text, continue to use a
variety of text features to find important information in a
text and lead to better understanding of a text. Folktales

Our academic success skill
focus will be metacognition knowing and being aware of
one's own thinking.
will help us analyze the relationship between the plot and the
central message in a story. We will also look at identifying
adjectives with closely related meanings, use known root
words and known prefixes to define the meaning of new
words and use context clues and glossaries to clarify the
meanings of unfamiliar words or phases.
In Math, we will use strategies to add and subtract 2-digit
numbers with or without composing a ten. As a result, students

should be able to explain why addition and subtraction strategies
work. We will also learn about odd numbers (any number ending in
a 1, 3, 5, 7, 9) and even numbers (any number ending in a 0 , 2,
4, 6, 8). We will continue to represent whole numbers on a 1–
100 number line and use a number line to represent sums and
differences. Please continue to have your child work on
strategies when adding and subtracting basic facts!
In Social Studies, we will explore geography to learn about

in terms of geography, we will look at cultures form other

Writer’s Workshop, we will continue to practice good writing
skills by focusing on grammar and forming and organizing
ideas to write a science observation.
