First Grade Fun February Reading: This month we will be reading informational texts. Students will identify the main idea of a book and give facts from the text to support it. Students will use various text features to help locate key facts within non-fiction texts. Please continue to read at home every night and include some informational texts about topics your child is interested in. Writing: We will be researching famous Black Americans. Each class will be researching a different person. Please ask your child who they are learning about and what they have learned. Math: In math, we will be measuring using non-standard tools, such as cubes, paper clips, feet, and fingerprints. Remember these three rules: 1. Each tool must be the same size. 2. Each tool must touch. 3. Measure from end to end. We will not be measuring with rulers. Students need to compare the length of different objects. Please use the following terms: longest , short est, widest, and t allest . Social Studies: We are learning about geography. Show your child a map and talk about what you see. We will learn to identify continents, oceans, and some countries. Valentines Party – Our Valentines party will be on Valentine’s Day. Please have your child make a card for each student in their class. The students should be writing their friends names by themselves. Individual class lists will be coming home shortly. 100th Day The 100th day of school is right around the corner. Each child can come to school on the 100th day dressed as Zero the Hero. Costumes should be homemade and have as many zeros as possible!
