First Grade Fun
January
Reading:
We are practicing reading with fluency. This means reading with
expression and appropriate speed. You can practice this at home by
modeling “robot reading” which is monotone and slow and by showing
fluent reading, which sounds like the way we talk.
When you are reading at home, encourage your child to use context
clues when coming to a word they do not know. They should use the
picture and the words around the unknown word as clues.
Writing:
This month we will be publishing personal narratives. Each story has a
beginning, middle, and end. Students will meet with their friends to
share their writing.
Math:
In math, students are working on identifying odd and even numbers.
Even numbers have pairs and odd numbers have one all alone.
We are also going to be learning about measurement. Students
will use non-standard forms on measurement, such as paperclips,
foot prints, cubes, and string to measure objects and compare length,
width, and height.
Social Studies and Science
We will be learning about magnets in science. Look around your house
for items that are and are not magnetic. We will also be learning
about how different objects move. Be on the lookout for January’s
homework project on movement.
We are continuing our research of different aspects of culture. Ask your
child what they have been learning about, food, homes, celebrations,
games, clothing, or music.
