Glen Haven Elementary School Kindergarten’s November 2009 Newsletter Dates to Remember: READING Guided reading groups are well under way. You child should read and reread the book then return it to the teacher. Ways to help your child at home: Read a book every night. Identify road signs you see when in the car, bus, or taking a walk. Identify the number of words in the book. Read the sight words. Identify the beginning sounds in words. Do a picture walk. WRITING Wow! Watch your child progress as he/she uses sight words while writing complete sentence. Can your child write his/her first and last name? Does he/she use a capital letter to begin the sentence? Does he/she use a period at the end of his/her sentences? Does he/ she use spaces between words? At home you can help your child by: Ask your child to help write a grocery list. Use the questions above when writing sentences for Wednesday’s homework. Family Affair Project … We hope you enjoyed working together to make the October family project. In November, your family will create a turkey. Throughout the year, five family affair projects will be sent home. You will have about a week to complete each. The K team will use them to decorate the kindergarten hallway. MC: Montgomery College The teaching program at MC has an intern program. MC students are assigned to work 45 hours in an actual working classroom for hands-on-experience. Most kindergarten classrooms have an MC student who is getting to know our kindergarteners and working with small groups under the direction and supervision of the classroom teacher. ESOL Ms. Green, the ESOL teacher assigned to support kindergarten, is very visible co-teaching in our classrooms. She works with small groups supporting the curriculum with oral language skills and special projects. MATH During Quarter 2, we will build a strong number sense foundation: Counting, One-to-one correspondence, Sets, Equal, Not Equal, Odd and Even, Ordinal Numbers (first, second, etc), Different ways to make a number. Students will also begin to identify tens and ones and use a number line. At home you can help your child by: 1. Counting by ones. Counting by tens. 2. Count one number for each object. 3. Identify equal and not equal. 4. Say the order of things. (1st, 2nd, etc…). 5. Pair objects: If each has a friend to play with they are even. If there is 1 left over it is odd. 6. Show a number in different ways: draw pictures, use tally marks, show objects, write the number, move that many times. Our annual classroom feast serves a traditional meal of turkey, cranberry sauce, yams, popcorn, apple juice, and pumpkin pie. The K Team will be sending a letter to request food donations. As we get closer to November 24th, please check backpacks. Thank you! HOMEWORK How is homework going at your house? Do you have a scheduled time to sit down to do homework? Do you have a set place (desk, table)? Do you have crayons and pencils collected before you start? Do you remember to return the homework on Mondays?
