Reading
We have been busy this September! Ask
your
child
what
some
of
the
beginning/during/after reading strategies
are. We’ve also learned that good readers
make connections such as text-self or
text-text. We will continue reading for
literary
experience,
identifying
the
elements of a story (setting, characters,
problem,
and
solution).
We
have
examined each element in isolation, as
well as how they work together to create
a story that’s interesting for the reader.
During modeled and shared reading we
will also learn how important it is to
understand plot as we learn what it
means to retell a story. At the end of
October, we will learn about text features
(Table of Contents, Captions, Labels,
Index, Headings, Charts and Graphs) and
determine their importance.
Writing
We
love
writing
about
personal
experiences, and we have learned what
the characteristics are for a good
personal narrative. Did you know that
revision is not the same as editing in the
writing process? When we revise our
work we are adding more information to
make our writing clear and interesting.
When we edit our work, we check that
our words are spelled correctly.
Math
Ms. Han, Ms. Hoover and Ms. Martin’s
classes will continue to work on addition
and
subtraction
strategies.
Their
classes’ first unit assessment will be on
October 15, 2009. In Unit 2, students
will learn to identify patterns. The
children will identify, continue, and
create their own patterns using different
shapes, colors, letters and numbers.
Mrs. Encarnacion and Ms. Talley’s
classes will continue to model and
identify numbers less than 1,000. Their
classes’ first unit assessment will be on
October 23, 2009. In Unit 2, they will
work to identify patterns and collect and
display data through graphing.
Parents, please continue to work on
addition and subtractions facts! Math
facts will be helpful for the rest of the
school year!
