GLEN HAVEN ELEMENTARY December 2009 First Grade News Reading Reading to Inform Math This month, we will read informational text. We will also continue to work on before-, duringand after-reading strategies. Ask your child to tell you about the difference between non-fiction (information texts) and fiction (make believe stories) Ms. Han, Ms. Hoover, and Ms. Martin’s classes will complete our study of measurement. Please continue to work with your child on telling time using an analog clock. For the rest of the month, we will model and write two digit numbers. The winter MCPSAP-PR (Reading Assessment) starts on January 12, 2009. Please continue to read with your child! Mrs. Encarnacion and Ms. Talley will continue to instruct students on geometry, specifically the difference between plane shapes (2-Dimensional) and solid figures (3-Dimensional). Students will also learn about symmetrical and congruent figures. Students will be instructed on movement of shapes (flips, slides, and turns). Writing Our focus this month is writing to perform a task. We will learn how to do research, organize our information, create headings, add details and group facts together. We will continue to add more information to our writing and revise our work with our friends in order to help our readers. Let’s not forget to pay attention to details, capitalization, and punctuation when we write!
