GLEN HAVEN January 2010 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL First Grade News Reading Reading to Inform Wow, the second marking period is almost over! The winter MCPSAP (Reading Assessment) starts on January 11, 2010, and will be complete by February 18, 2010. As a whole group, we will identify before, during, and after reading strategies to perform a task (from recipes, craft books, etc.). We will use a checklist to ensure we are perform each task properly. Writing Writing to Inform For the first half of the month, we will come up with various topics we would like to write about. Then we will organize and create a story. Next, we will learn the 5 main parts of a letter (Date, Heading, Body, Closing, and Signature) and begin to write a persuasive letter. Remember to pay attention to details, capitalization, punctuation, and characterizing. Math Ms. Han’s, Ms. Hoover’s, and Ms. Martin’s classes will take the Unit 2 assessment during the first part of January. In Unit 3, we will continue to work with addition and subtraction concepts, and model the inverse operation. Students will also be able to identify how many more, use the counting on and back strategies, and complete fact families. Mrs. Encarnacion’s and Ms. Talley’s classes will continue to work on addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers using regrouping. Have a Healthy and Happy New Year!
