First Grade News
Reading
The students will begin to look at plays
and continue to read short stories in
May. Each first grade class will perform
a fairy tale play. More information from
your child’s teacher will follow.
The students will also take the MCPSAP PR for the final time this year. The
scores on this test will determine
whether your child has reached the
benchmark for first grade. In order to
reach benchmark, your child needs to be
able to read and understand a level 16 or
above book. It is extremely important
that the students be able to write down
their understanding of the text.
Math
Ms. Han’s, Ms. Hoover’s, and Ms. Martin’s
classes will work to identify money and
fractions. We will also begin to solve
word problems using multiplication and
division strategies.
Mrs. Encarnacion’s and Ms. Talley’s
classes will continue to solve and
represent multiplication and division
problems.
Writing
In writing, we will continue work on
creating stories. The students use the
short stories we read in class as models for
their own writing. Spelling tests will
continue to be given this month. Please
keep doing a great job studying the spelling
words each week!
