Douglas Named Big South Freshman of the Week
Redshirt freshman outside hitter Caroline Douglas had a standout weekend in Durham, leading the Lady Flames with 3.64 kills per set and a .515 hitting percentage through
three matches. She was named to the North Carolina Central all-tournament team, and
was tabbed Big South Freshman of the Week on Monday.
She opened her career with 19 kills against UNCG, connecting at a .548 clip, and added 16 kills on .538 efficiency on Saturday against Elon. Her kills total and hitting percentage against UNCG are the best of any Liberty volleyball player during a season opener in
the rally-scoring era.
Acing the Test
Liberty served up 35 aces over the span of three matches at the North Carolina Central Tournament. The Lady Flames totaled 13 aces in the season opener against UNCG,
and followed with 13 against N.C. Central and nine versus Elon on Saturday.
Nine different Lady Flames recorded at least one ace over the weekend, led by 10
from Lillie Happel.
The Lady Flames have registered one or more aces during each of their last 217
matches, a streak which started Oct. 7, 2005 at Charleston Southern.
Double-Double
Lillie Happel recorded her 20th career double-double on Friday against UNCG, with
15 kills and 16 digs. Jade Craycraft collected the 14th double-double of her career in the
same match, with 42 assists and 13 digs.
Happel has now registered double-digit kill totals in the season opener during each of
her three seasons at Liberty. She is the first Lady Flame in the rally-scoring era to begin
her career with 10 or more kills in three straight season openers.
Dig In
Sophomore Gabrielle Shipe, starting at libero in the season opener for the second
year in a row, collected a career-high 20 digs on Friday versus UNCG. She led the Lady
Flames with eight digs as the libero in last year’s first match, Aug. 26, 2011 at Georgia.
Early Opening
Tuesday’s match will be just the fourth Liberty volleyball match contested in the Vines
Center during the month of August, all-time. The Lady Flames opened the 2007 season
by hosting the Liberty Invitational, Aug. 24-25, going 2-1 during the invitational.
Down to the Wire
Prior to Liberty’s 3-2 setback to UNCG on Friday, the Lady Flames had won their last
11 five-set matches in a row, dating to a 3-2 loss at UC Irvine, Sept. 16, 2010.
Liberty went 6-0 in five-set contests last season, with all six five-set contests taking
place in Big South play. Since 2009, the Lady Flames are 16-4 in five-set matches.
Top Honors
Last season, Liberty placed four players on the Big South All-Conference team, marking the third year in a row in which the Lady Flames had four all-conference selections.
Middle blocker Loren Thomas and outside hitter Lillie Happel were named to the first
team, while setter Jade Craycraft and libero Kelly Haseman were second-team picks.
Thomas earned Big South Tournament MVP honors in 2011, and was joined on the
All-Tournament Team by Happel and Haseman.

Drive for 5
The Liberty volleyball team has posted five straight 20-win seasons, earned five conference regular-season titles and made five appearances in the Big South final in a row
(2007-2011). This places the Lady Flames in select company.
Liberty is:
- one of five volleyball programs in NCAA Division I to have won or shared their conference or division regular-season championship in each of the last five years.
- one of 10 volleyball programs in NCAA Division I to appear in its conference championship match in each of the last five seasons.
- one of 29 teams in NCAA Division I with five or more 20-win seasons in a row at
present.
Great Expectations
The Lady Flames have been predicted to win the 2012 Big South volleyball championship, while Loren Thomas was the Preseason Player of the Year and Lillie Happel also
appeared on the preseason all-conference list. Thomas is the first Lady Flame since Kallie
Corbin in 2009 to be named Big South Preseason Volleyball Player of the Year.
A Lot Returning, More Arriving
Liberty returns six starters from last year’s 20-win, conference-champion team. Kelly
Haseman, the program’s career digs leader, was the lone graduating starter from 2011.
Three all-conference players (Loren Thomas, Lillie Happel and Jade Craycraft) are
back, and are joined by a deep roster.
This year’s roster features 18 players, 11 of whom are freshmen or sophomores. This
year’s true freshman class of seven is the largest for Liberty volleyball since the 1993
team had seven freshmen.
