2014MarchKnewsletter

Dear Kindergarten Parents,
March
It is hard to believe that March is here! In class we predicted whether March would come in as a
lion or lamb. We are hoping for springtime weather soon!
In social studies, we will continue to talk about choices we make including alternative choices. We
have talked about goods and services and people who provide them. Lessons also included workers in
our community and the tools they use to do their jobs.
In reading/language arts, we continue to focus on words that have digraphs (ch, th, sh) and blends
(bl-,cl-, sl-, gl-, fl-). Students have been busy writing in Writing Workshop time. We have been
using descriptive words in our writing. Students will be learning how to take a piece of writing
through the writing process including writing a draft, conferencing with a peer, revising and editing,
and finally, publishing their piece. We encourage them to consistently check the word wall for
accuracy when writing our kindergarten sight words. For Dr. Seuss’ 110th birthday, we will celebrate
by reading many of his books with our second grade Reading Buddies.
In science, we have enjoyed exploring the life cycle of the darkling beetle. We cared for our
mealworms, pupae, and now for our darkling beetles. We hope that some of our darkling beetles will
lay eggs to start the life cycle again. We will be exploring attributes of insects and will begin
talking about animals and their body coverings. Additionally, we have explored biomes/ecosystems
found in our state of Maryland as well as those that are located in other regions. We are working in
groups to create class murals.
In math, we have been reviewing the measurement portion of Unit 3. The children have had fun
experimenting w ith length and weight. It always helps to reinforce these words at home.
Additionally, we have been working on the geometry portion which includes identifying shapes
(triangle, circle, square, rectangle, hexagon) and their attributes. Students must also identify
solids and their attributes including sphere, cube, cone, pyramid, cylinder, and rectangular prism.
Have fun looking for these shapes and solids in your everyday world.
Our Sweetheart Sing and Valentine parties were both a wonderful success! A big heartfelt thank
you goes to all our parent volunteers for making these days so special for the children.
Please remember there is a Professional Day for teachers on Friday, March 28 th, and Spring Break
will begin Monday, April 14th . Students will return to school on Tuesday, April 22nd.
Fondly,
Chrisi Homon and Andrea Siska
