Hello summer!
We hope you and your family have a restful and enjoyable summer break.
We know how important it is for all of us to take a break from our normal routines
to recharge our batteries. That’s the joy of summer. But, we ask that you also please
remember how important it is to keep your children reading throughout the
summer months. They worked hard to make the progress they did, and we don’t
want to see them lose ground. Try to visit the library often! They have a terrific
summer reading program. Perhaps this summer you and your child will want to
explore Arnold Lobel’s books such as the Henry and Mudge books or the Frog and
Toad series? Maybe your child will want to revisit the Kevin Henkes books we
read early in the school year. Or, if your child is ready for chapter books, the Magic
Tree House books are full of adventure and history. They are great for a read-aloud
too. Try to include a mixture of fiction and nonfiction books when you’re choosing
books together.
We will post several websites your children can visit to practice their math skills
over the summer. Please refer to the First Grade page on the Cashell website.
Earlier in the year in social studies, your students learned how to read a map. Let
your child help you to plan a trip using a map this summer. Additionally, in social
studies students learned about making choices and the value of goods and services.
Have your child participate in making choices when you go shopping.
Finally, as many of you have probably already noticed, we spent a good part of this
last marking period in science and writing investigating how humans harm the
environment, and ways we can help to protect it. Perhaps this would be a good
summer to create a compost pile or put up a birdhouse with your child? Ask your
student to help your family practice the 3-R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Together we
can help to make this a more beautiful Earth!
Thank you for sharing your children with us! Have a relaxing and restful summer,
and please don’t forget to visit us at Sneak Preview!
