Second Grade Classroom Connection
In reading, students will read poetry in order to ask and answer questions and describe how words
and phrases supply rhythm and meaning to the text. Through poetry, students are learning how
poets use words and phrases to express ideas. Students will engage in Shared Inquiry Discussions
with two Junior Great Book stories. Next, they will be discussing how the main characters in both
of these stories respond to challenges. Students continue to strengthen their asking and answering
questions skill focusing on key details in the text, in order to clarify or further explain the text.
Students also acknowledge differences in the points of views of characters.
In writing, students continue to study and write opinion texts. They will write a book review that
addresses the question: How do ideas in a text connect to you? While writing, students will reflect
on their understanding of opinion and read and analyze mentor book reviews to develop an anchor
chart of elements of opinion writing. They will discuss books with peers to refine text selection
and develop reasons about why they connect to the ideas in the book. Students will write a book
review that introduces the book, includes a clear opinion statement, provides reasons that connect
to the ideas in the book, uses linking words to connect the reasons and opinion, and provides a
conclusion statement. They will use evidence from the book to support their reasons and confirm
that the evidence they include is relevant. Finally, they will use technology, including word
processing and a drawing tool to edit, revise and publish their book review. To conclude this unit,
students will share their published piece with peers. Use of language instruction focuses on formal
and informal language, adjectives and adverbs, apostrophes, irregular past tense of verbs, and
producing, rearranging and expanding sentences.
In math, students will tell time using analog and digital clocks. We will focus on writing time in
various ways (quarter to, half past, etc.). Students who have mastered time will be exposed to
elapsed time and word problems for enrichment. Our unit of study will consist of geometry to
include shapes and partitioning shapes into halves, thirds, and fourths. Finally, we will begin
learning about arrays by repeated addition (another way to show multiplication).
In social studies, students are learning about Economics by studying goods and services,
government versus business, financial transactions, distribution of goods through markets, and
making economic decisions in our world!
In science, students have been so engaged in our study of Astronomy! We will begin to transition
into the survival methods of animal and plants in familiar and unfamiliar habitats, plant observation
of our radish plants, and satisfaction of basic needs. In week 9, we will switch to Health Education
where students will discuss how their family takes care of them, helps them mature, stay safe, and
be responsible.

We can’t believe we are a
little over a month away from
spring break and the 4th and
last marking period in Second
Grade! With this winter (or
lack of) and taste of spring
weather, I am sure we are all
ready for warmer temps and
some fun in the sun! This year
is really starting to fly. We
know how hard the students
have been working and we are
very proud of the great
choices they are making and
the dedication they put forth
each and every day in school!
Keep up the fantastic work!
