Wrapping Up November 2015
Literacy
Math
Our students are practicing identifying and retelling important
details from a story. We have been working on retelling
through pictures and words. This is a difficult skill and
requires a lot of practice! As you read stories with your
children at home, ask them to retell what happened in the
story focusing on events from the beginning, middle and end.
Encourage them to use the characters names in their retelling
instead of “she, he, or they”. During our phonemic awareness
lessons, we are finishing up learning the last few letter sounds.
The students are working hard to identify the word wall words
and use the word wall as a tool when writing sentences. Keep
up the great work at home. We can tell they are practicing
their words with you too! Writing has become a regular part of
our week and the students are starting to become more
comfortable sounding out words independently. As you write
with them at home encourage them to use their “spooky” voice
and “stretch” out at least the beginning and ending sound of an
unfamiliar word.
Kinder
Science
During our science lessons, we
will continue to explore
different kinds of seeds and
what a seed needs to grow. We
will be learning about the life
cycle of a seed and how a seed
turns into a plant. We will also
be comparing the basic needs of
plants and animals. Our focus on
the seasons continues
throughout the year as we enter
different seasons and talk
about the impact each season
has on living things.
“Numbers “is the magic word in Kindergarten this
marking period! We are exploring everything “numbers”
during our math lessons. The students are working hard
to identify and correctly write numerals through 20. We
have been working on identifying numbers as more, less,
and equal and using base ten blocks and tens frames to
show a number as ten and some more. We are practicing
counting sets of objects and matching the numeral to
the set. Many of the students are having difficulty
around the numbers 13 to 17. At home, let your child
practice their counting by counting down the days until
Winter Break on the calendar, counting how many pieces
of Halloween candy are left, the coins in their piggy
bank, etc.
Social Studies
It’s Flu Season!
Students are becoming
familiar with the parts of
the Earth and how they are
represented on the globe in
our classrooms. We have
explored attributes of
different landforms and
bodies of water. We will
also look for the kinds of
animals and plants that live
near those physical features.
While we hope that our classrooms stay healthy this flu
season, we have to anticipate that something will go around and
cause the children to get sick. If your child comes down with a
fever, they must stay home and be fever free without medicine
for 24 hours before returning to school. Thanks for helping us
keep our classrooms healthy! Also, please make sure that we
have an emergency contact listed that is someone who can pick
your child up if you cannot get to them and they become sick at
school.
Reminders and THANKS!
*Please mail birthday invitations to classmates if your child is not
including the entire class to prevent hurt feelings of being left
out.
*Remind your children not to share food at lunch with others. We
have many children with allergies and diet restrictions. Sharing
could cause health problems for classmates.
*We are always in desperate need of glue sticks in Kindergarten.
*Please remember to read your child’s reading book with him/her
and practice the word wall words. Return books in a bag every
day!!!!
*Thanks to all who made our Thanksgiving Feast a huge success
through donations of food and time!
Calendar
December 24 – January 4 – Winter Break
It’s Cold Outside!
As the weather turns colder please make sure that your child
has a jacket to wear to school. It is helpful if their initials or
names are written on a tag inside their jackets if it gets lost.
Also, if you send in hats or gloves with your children – label
those as well. At home, have your child practice zipping and
buttoning their coat. This helps us to get ready for recess and
dismissal. Thanks for your help!
Holiday Celebrations
During the month of December we will be learning about the
different holidays celebrated during the season
