4th HGC April May Newsletter

Newsletter Fourth Grade HGC
Spring is finally here and the children have been working hard on their
Artist/musician project along with the Gemstone project. Since May and June will
be upon us soon, we wanted to inform you of some field trips and events that will
occur. In May we will travel to Annapolis for our annual colonial stroll. This will
be our last field trip of the year. In June, students will participate in the school
wide field day. I know Mr. Baude will be looking for volunteers.
GEMSTONE PROJECT
The Gemstone project is a research project in which the children will showcase
the skills they have learned this year. The students will brainstorm everyday
problems and come up with simple inventions to solve those problems. The
students will engage in self-guided research in order to learn information needed
to create their invention. They will create multiple sketches and prototypes while
having frequent opportunities to receive and implement peer feedback. In
addition, the students will create visual aids to enhance their oral presentation.
Science
In Science, we will study the properties of Rocks and Minerals and we will
examine fossils. We will also learn about the weathering process.
Social Studies
In Social Studies, we will study colonial regions and the French and Indian War.
We will determine the role triangular trade routes played in the economic
development of the colonies. In addition, we will examine the events and
outcomes of the French and Indian war.
Language Arts
In Language Arts in April, students are working on their Artist/Musician project
culminating in a Presentation of their Artist/Musician during the week of April
25th. Following that activity, students will move into writing on the topic of our
unit, which is “Journeys”, with a specific focus on Authors and author study.
Math
During math this marking period students will estimate and calculate quotients of
up to 4-digit dividends and 2- digit divisors. Students’ understanding of division is
based on place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between
multiplication and division. Area models and drawings are pictorial
representations that support their understanding. They will also be using their
knowledge of equivalent fractions to calculate and create scale drawings.
Students will do some algebraic thinking as they analyze function tables and graph
order pairs. They will end the year with classifying 2 dimensional figures.
