4th GT January Newsletter 2016

Newsletter Fourth Grade HGC
January is here and it has brought with it cold weather. But it also brings opportunities for new
and exciting learning. We have encouraged our students to set goals for their learning and to
develop plans for achieving those goals.
Science
We continue to focus on the scientific process as students begin conducting their own
investigation. During this unit, we will determine the importance of research and the need for
clear, precise written processes. Students will be conducting pollution experiments on their
ecosystems and monitoring the results. We will also be determining the economic impact
imposed when pollution regulations/changes are enacted.
Social Studies
We have begun our study of explorers. The focus of this unit is for students to determine
motivation for exploration and for students to understand how these explorers interacted with
the native people.
Language Arts
Students are beginning to write their own Literary Non-Fiction stories based on the topic: The
Age of Exploration. These stories will be based on facts and will need researched in order to
write the story correctly. Students will learn how to do the research and their stories will be
due later in the month. It is a great opportunity to engage their great creativity!
Math
We are studying geometry as we come to the end of marking period 2. Students will identify
and create lines, line segments, perpendicular and parallel lines. They will identify lines of
symmetry and measure angles. Protractors will be used to aid in the understanding of degrees
of measurement. Students will use these attributes to classify two-dimensional figures.
