4th HGC November Newsletter

Newsletter Fourth Grade HGC
As we look forward to the second quarter, we are thankful for the many gifts and talents of our
students and the help and support their parents provide. The students had an amazing time
visiting the Walter Art Museum and the Halloween parties and parades were tons of
fun. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to help with these events. We will visit
the Native American Museum this month to further explore our study of Native American
Culture. Conferences begin this week. You should have received an email reminding you to
sign up for conferences with Sign-Up Genius. If you have not already done so, please sign up as
soon as possible.
Science
Students will examine how natural and human-influenced events impact ecosystems. In
addition, we will differentiate between testable, research, and observable questions in order to
design a scientific investigation around a testable question.
Social Studies
Students will describe the effect of scarcity of land on consumers and describe how scarcity
determines what goods and services are produced or provided in a community.. We will also
identify the opportunity costs of economic decisions made by businesses. The students will use
this information to propose a new business for the local community.
Language Arts
We are moving into a Language Arts mini-unit on Ecology and the researching and analyzing the
human impact on the environment. Part of this unit will include a debate on some of the issues
surrounding the ecological factors man plays in environmental impact. Students will read and
analyze various research to form their own opinion of the issues.
Math
Students will examine prime and composite numbers through factor pairs and multiples. They
will also examine the relationships with fractions. The first half of the marking period will
address comparing fractions and finding equivalent fractions.
