Reading Update Math Update We will begin quarter 3 studying Greek Mythology. Students will learn about Greek allusions such as "The Midas Touch," "Pandora's Box," and "Herculean Effort." All students have recently received fantasy books for our small group novel studies. In addition, Mrs. Randall will read, Where the Mountain Meets to Moon, over a 4 week period. We will use this novel to study characters, theme, inferences, recalling details, sequencing and figurative language such as similes and metaphors. Thank you to everyone that turned in a reading log to Mrs. Randall. It’s not too late! We would love to see everyone reach our 25 book goal by the end of the year! We worked hard during the first two quarters on our base ten skills. We multiplied and divided and used whole numbers to solve problems. Now we are moving into our fractions unit. We have already started to compare fractions and to name equivalent fractions. In the coming weeks we continue to compare fractions, order fractions, add and subtract fractions with the same denominators, and begin to multiply fractions. Heavy focus is on using a number line to help students understand the concepts. Social Studies In Social Studies, we are studying the first English Colonies at Jamestown and Plymouth. Students will investigate life in England and reasons for migrating. We will also learn about daily life in these colonies and hardships that the colonists experienced. We will also discuss ways that the English and Native Americans borrowed and shared culture. Science What’s the weather like? Over the next few weeks we will be focusing on the weather. We will be taking daily observations using the schools Weather Bug station and looking at patterns in the weather. In conjunction with studying weather we will be studying matter and how it can change states. Then we will make connections between the changing states of matter and the weather.
