Lanier Open Carry Law Letter
I am writing about the recent change in Texas law that went into effect on Jan. 1, 2016, regarding carrying
firearms in open view in some locations. I would like to reassure you that HISD has never allowed handguns
or other prohibited weapons to be carried into any of our schools or educational facilities.

Attendance Matters
Absences
Daily attendance is mandatory by The State of Texas. Lanier is required to follow the following responsibilities
regarding truancy. As a reminder absences before or after a holiday are not excused without proper illness
documentation.
• Students who have 3 absences in a 30 day period will be required to attend a 4-hour Saturday detention to
make up the instructional time lost.
• High School Credit classes will not be awarded credit for absences in excess of 10%.
• Vanguard magnet transfers may not be renewed the following year due to excessive absences.
• 3 or more unexcused absences or partial absences within a 4 week period
o Mandatory parent/administrator meeting
o Truancy prevention measures applied
ï‚§ Behavior contract
ï‚§ Court
• 10 or more unexcused absences or partial absences within a 6 month period
ï‚§ Court within 45 days
Tardies
All students arrive after 8:00 am must enter through the front of the building. Students arriving after 8:00 am
will be required to sign in. Repeated tardies may result in the following corrective measures.
• 2+ tardies in (1) week – Call home
• 5+ tardies – Call home, home visit
• 8+ tardies – Call home, attendance contract, Saturday Detention
• 10+ tardies – Call home, Magnet/Transfer status for 2017-2018 reviewed

School Supply Lists for 2017-2018

Sports Physical @ Lanier, August 29 & 31 (3:30 pm-6:00 pm)
Lanier will be offering physicals on campus August 29th and August 31st from 3:30-6:00pm in the cafeteria.
Parents are NOT required to attend, students will need $15 cash to pay for the physical.


Vocabulary Bowl Update
The 2017 results of the Vocabulary Bowl have been released. Lanier Middle School earned the following
achievements: • North America top 10 school • Texas State Runner Up • Texas State Top 10 school

2017 SUMMER READING LIST
All incoming Lanier Pups will be expected to read at least 3 books over the summer break. There will be ONE
mandatory book and TWO choice books per grade level. Students will have a choice of eight titles for the
choice books; they will need to read at least TWO of those titles. Please see the following list to ensure your
Pup has completed the books by the start of the 2017-2018 school year.

