Big South Regular-Season Championships: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010

Big South Coach of the Year: 2007
VaSID State Coach of the Year: 2007, 2008
Shane Pinder has helped the Liberty volleyball program reach new heights during his
six seasons as head coach. Most recently, the 2008 Virginia Sports Information Directors
(VaSID) State Coach of the Year guided the Lady Flames to their fourth-straight Big South
title.
Pinder’s 2008 Lady Flames went 25-9 overall, wrapping up the squad’s best two-year
run at the NCAA Division I level. Liberty has now shared the Big South regular-season
crown for the second season in a row.
For the second straight season, the Lady Flames won a set in the first round of the
NCAA Division I Tournament, versus eventual Final Four qualifier Nebraska. Liberty’s season also featured the program’s first-ever victory against a Division I team from California,
when the Lady Flames swept Big West runner-up UC Irvine.
Individually, setter Kallie Corbin was named the Lady Flames’ first honorable mention
AVCA Division I All-American, one of many awards she earned during the year. Pinder
also continued to develop young talent, as libero Kelly Haseman gave Liberty a representative on the Big South All-Freshman Team for the fifth season in a row.
Pinder’s 2007 squad captured the program’s first Big South title since 2001 and took
a set from Final Four participant California in the opening round of the NCAA Division I
Tournament. Liberty went 27-9 on the year, establishing a school NCAA Division I record
for victories and marking the third-biggest improvement in the nation from the previous
year. As a result, Pinder swept the Big South and VaSID State Coach of the Year honors
at season’s end.
The Lady Flames swept Winthrop 3-0 on Oct. 27, 2007 halting the Eagles’ 63-match
Big South winning streak. The win was part of Liberty’s string of 10 consecutive 3-0
sweeps during the month of October.
One key to the Lady Flames’ success in 2007 was defense. Liberty ranked eighth in
the nation with 19.81 digs per game and garnered honorable mention for the CVU.com
Deep Digging Team of the Year award.
During the 2006 campaign, Pinder guided the Lady Flames to a 9-5 conference mark,
which enabled the team to capture the No. 3 seed in the Big South Championship and
host a first-round match for the first time in five years.
Pinder oversaw the emergence of sophomore setter Lara Bartolomeo, sophomore
outside hitter Jessica Nelson and freshman outside hitter Kendall Nichols in 2005. Bartolomeo and Nelson ranked among the Big South leaders in assists and kills, respectively, and Nichols made the Big South All-Freshman Team. Another highlight of the Lady
Flames’ 2005 season was a victory over Binghamton, a team which won 20 matches and
qualified for the NCAA Division I Tournament.
In 2004, Pinder’s first season as head coach, the Lady Flames claimed 10 wins in
their final 13 matches. Liberty’s season ended after the Lady Flames took the eventual
Big South champion (Winthrop) to five sets in the semifinal round of the Big South Volleyball Championship.
Prior to his head coaching position, Pinder spent three seasons (1999-2001) as an
assistant on Liberty’s coaching staff. In the role, he helped guide the Lady Flames to Big
South Conference titles in 1999 and 2001 and two trips to the NCAA Division I Tournament.
Pinder, a native of Nassau, Bahamas, attended Broward Community College in Miami, Fla., for two years and graduated from Liberty Bible Institute in 2000 and Luther Rice
Seminary in 2004.

Scouting Gardner-Webb
Gardner-Webb enters the Big South Championship with a 5-26 overall record and
remains winless with a 0-16 mark in conference play. The Bulldogs’ last win came on Oct.
12, when they swept North Carolina A&T, 3-0, in Greensboro, N.C. That win snapped a
10-match losing streak.
Gardner-Webb has a young squad this year, with no seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and five freshmen. Sophomore middle blocker Laura Wilcox, the 2008 Big South
Freshman of the Year, leads the team with a .230 attack percentage, while junior setter
Evan Moffitt ranks eighth in the conference with 7.89 assists per set. In addition, freshman
Tyler Cockrell ranks No. 2 in the Big South, averaging 1.09 blocks per set.
The Coaching Matchup
Liberty Head Coach Shane Pinder is 127-99 in his seventh season with the Lady
Flames. The 2007 Big South Coach of the Year has guided Liberty to four straight Big
South regular-season titles and back-to-back tournament championships in 2007 and
2008. The Lady Flames are 95-38 in the past four seasons under his direction, including
8-0 versus Gardner-Webb.
Chris Phillips is 58-130 in her sixth season as Gardner-Webb’s head coach and 403399 in 22 total seasons as a collegiate head coach. She coached Liberty for a total of 11
seasons (1992-97, 1999-2003), leading the Lady Flames to Big South titles in 1997, 1999
and 2001. She is 0-8 coaching against Liberty.
Liberty-Gardner-Webb Series Notes
Liberty is 9-0 all-time versus Gardner-Webb, after sweeping the teams’ regular-season series this season. The Lady Flames swept both meetings this year, taking the 3-0
decision on Sept. 24 in Boiling Springs, N.C., before defeating the visiting Bulldogs at the
Vines Center on Oct. 23.
The Lady Flames and Bulldogs are meeting in the Big South quarterfinal round for the
third consecutive season. In 2008, Liberty claimed a 3-0 victory in Gardner-Webb’s firstever Big South Championship contest, and did the same in 2009.

Alone at the Top
2010 marks the fourth consecutive year that Liberty has held at least a share of the
Big South regular-season title, as the Lady Flames are the lone champion with a 14-2
conference mark this season. The Lady Flames have now won four consecutive regularseason conference titles for the first time in program history.
A New Program Mark
The Lady Flames’ 14 Big South wins marks the most in program history, and ties for
the most wins in Big South history. Radford picked up 14 victories in 2001, while Winthrop
posted 14 conference wins in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Up For the Challenge
Prior to falling to the Winthrop Eagles on the road, 3-1 on Oct. 30, the Lady Flames were
on a two-match winning streak at Winthrop Coliseum. Liberty hadn’t lost a match at the
venue since Sept. 29, 2007, when the Eagles walked away with a 3-1 win on their home
court.
They’ve got Momentum...
The Lady Flames enter the 2010 Big South Championship on a three-match winning
streak, after beating Coastal Carolina, Radford and UNC Asheville in the month of November to concude the regular season. Liberty’s last loss was a 3-1 decision on the road to
Winthrop on Oct. 30.
