Dear Parents,
Reminders. . .
Welcome back to all our returning Burnt Mills families
and our new third grade families. Our first few days
have launched off successfully! Our daily activities
have consisted of getting-to-know-you activities,
learning our school rules and procedures, and
establishing routines within the classroom.

It’s going to be a great year of learning. The third
grade team is looking forward to working with you
and your family throughout the year.



Please make sure that your child returns the
Wednesday folder on Thursdays. Read over all
of the documents and return the ones that
request information inside of the folder
In Reading. . .
In Math. . .
We begin the year learning how to select a “just
right” book for independent reading. If a text is
selected that is either too hard or too easy, reading
improvement is difficult. When choosing a “just right”
book, students decide whether it can be read
smoothly with just a few places where they need to
slow down and think about meaning.
Students will need to demonstrate an
understanding of the value of each of the digits
(ones, tens, hundreds) in order to round numbers
within 1000. Additionally, students will learn how to
fluently add and subtract within 1000 using
strategies and algorithms based on place value,
properties or operations, and/or the relationship
between addition and subtraction.
In third grade, will spend a significant amount of time
practicing making relevant connections that tie into
the central theme, or big idea of the story. Relevant
connections help readers form a deeper
understanding of the story and the world around
them.
In Social Studies. . .
In Science. . .
Students will explore the basic functions of
governments: creating structure through laws,
enforcing laws, and interpreting laws and disputes.
Students explore the selection process, roles, and
responsibilities of local government leaders in a
democracy.
Students will explore forces and motion. Specifically,
students will describe the motion of objects using
position and speed and explain how forces, such as
push, pull, gravity, and friction affect the motion of
objects. Students will identify how materials, tools,
and techniques are used to carry out a task or
address a problem.
In Writing. . .
Students will embark on new journey in writing. They
will learn how to emphasize a message when writing
narrative, informative, and opinion texts. Throughout
the marking period, as students write, they may
benefit from the supports of a variety of different
digital tools and other graphic organizers.
