Third Grade News
October
Dear Parents,
BURNT MILLS ELEMENTARY
Ms. Cohen * Ms. Edgar * Mrs. Orellana * Ms. Stuart
Reminders. . .
W e would like to thank everyone that attended
Back-To-School Night, and we hope that it
provided you with some insight into what the
school year holds for your third grader. As we
begin the second half of the first marking period,
we ask that you continue to discuss the
importance of working hard and staying focused!
This month we have planned some exciting
activities with the Pumpkin Patch coming back to
BMES and our Harvest Celebration!

In Reading. . .
In Math. . .
Third graders will read informational text. This kind
of text is also known as non-fiction text. W e will
focus on identifying the author’s purpose and text
features within the books or articles. Stop by your
local public library and check out some
informational books this month or have your child
read up on the local news with Time for Kids!
Students will learn how to fluently add and
subtract within 1000 using strategies and
algorithms based on place value, properties or
operations, and/or the relationship between
addition and subtraction. These skills can be
reviewed at home when shopping, cooking, or
even while playing with toys!
In Social Studies. . .
In Science. . .
Students will explore the basic functions of
governments:
creating structure through
applying and enforcing laws. They will be able to
compare and contrast the role of the
government in the Ancient Roman Republic and
the United States today. Students will explore the
selection process, roles, and responsibilities of
local government leaders in a democracy in the
past and in the present.
Third graders will explore forces and motion.
Specifically, students will describe the motion of
objects using position and speed and explain
how forces, such as push, pull, gravity, and
friction affect the motion of objects. They will be
working hands on to create a “Mouse Trap”
Maze.
In Writing. . .
W e will use informational texts and online
resources to research a topic.
Using the
information, we will write an informative essay
about a community action plan for the common
good. Topics to research include: Jump Rope For
Heart or Drive for Supplies.
