November
Dear Parents,
BURNT MILLS ELEMENTARY
Ms. Cohen * Ms. Edgar * Mrs. Orellana * Ms. Stuart
Reminders. . .
W e hope you had a wonderful holiday break
with your children and family. We are
approaching the quarter 2 interim time, and the
students are working hard to prepare for 4 t h
grade. W e are excited about the learning that is
taking place. Here is what’s going on…

In Reading. . .
In Math. . .
W e are wrapping our lessons on plays. Students
spent time dissecting that parts of a play,
identifying theme and point of view. We will be
moving on to informational text (non-fiction) and
students will be learning to ask and answer
questions in order to clarify information,
participate in collaborative discussion on
geographical topics. They will also be able to
use text features, both digital and print, to find
information and apply knowledge in new ways.
Students are continuing to work on identifying
the relationship between multiplication and
division. They will expand their minds by
modeling and explaining breaking apart
columns or rows in an array to determine a
product (distributive property)
In Social Studies. . .
In Science. . .
Students will be focusing on the continent of
Africa. They will explore comparing regions and
places and understanding how technology
influences the way people lived in the past and
present
In Science, students will be able to ask testable
questions and investigate possible answers
regarding what happens to objects if a
different process is applied. They will be able
to compare the observable properties of
objects or materials before and after various
processes are applied. These concepts will be
explored throughout our Keep-a-cube
experiment.
In Writing. . .
Since students will be focusing on Africa in social
studies, students will transfer that knowledge into
an informative writing piece where they will
research how technology has changed
throughout the years in a country within Africa.
For example, they might research how
transportation has evolved in Egypt.

Students should be able to multiply the 0-10
times tables.
o On the homework calendar, there
are a few multiplication equations for
your child to memorize each night
There is always homework. Check and sign
the blue Student Planner each night.
This is a great chart to help kids learn the multiplication facts.
